Lunar overview

Lunar controls the same brightness that you can change by using the monitor's physical buttons.

  • Sensor-based Adaptive Brightness (and contrast) based on an external light sensor
  • Sync-based Adaptive Brightness (and contrast) based on the built-in light sensor of the Macbook or iMac
  • Location-based Adaptive Brightness (and contrast) based on the sunrise/sunset times in your location
  • App Exception list if you need more brightness for specific activities (watching movies, design work)
  • Individual settings per display
  • Manual controls and hotkeys for setting brightness and contrast that respect the min/max values per monitor

It doesn't interfere at all with the native adaptive brightness that macOS implements for the built-in display

It works well along Night Shift and True Tone (and f.lux if Gamma/Software controls are not used)

What’s new in version 6.6.2

Updated on Feb 29 2024

Features
  • Force enable Night Shift and True Tone on external monitors that support them but don't work out of the box
Improvements
  • Allow Auto Blackout to work in more edge cases like: (A) when coming back from standby, the monitor connects too slowly and for a few seconds it appears as there's no display available; (B) when opening the lid of the MacBook while clamshell mode is disabled
  • Stop brightness and lux CLI listeners when the socket closes
Fixes
  • Fix specific features like observing brightness on the 2023 M2 MacBook Air 15"
  • Fix keyboard backlight being turned on when it shouldn't
  • Fix a bug that caused the builtin to come out of Blackout intermitently on Intel Macs
  • Disable Full Range XDR on Pro Display XDR screens since it is not working there
  • Fix Full Range XDR and Gamma Dimming not being available sometimes after coming back from blackout
  • Workaround a macOS bug that can cause system slow downs because CoreLocation is timing out
  • Make sure the DIY light sensor install script gets the correct enclosing dir
  • Make sure lunar toggle-connection returns immediately after disconnect
  • Fix built-in not reconnecting after disconnecting all monitors in specific cases
  • Fix Auto Mode not selecting Sensor Mode when the built-in is disconnected
  • Fix Sync Mode setting external displays to a very low brightness when activating XDR Brightness
  • Delay specific actions after wake/login to avoid system hangs. Actions that are delayed include: (A) watching for screencapture events when using overlay dimming; (B) checking for zero gamma issues; (C) adapting brightness if the Delay after wake setting is enabled

NOTE: Versions 4.0 onward will NOT work with macOS 10.14. Stick with v3.2.3. There's an error in the coding for v3.2.3 that thinks it can be updated to v4.0.2. Do NOT do it, because the result is that Lunar 4 will ask for Accessibility permission, then permanently CRASH. Stick with v3.2.3. You can download v3.2.3 from the dev's website.

Well, I can now control my external monitor (LG 4K HDR) brightness with my Apple keyboard using DDC (USB-C to Display Port cable from M1 Mac mini). Excellent work by all involved!
