teleport overview

teleport is a simple prefpane utility to let you use one single mouse and keyboard to control several of your Macs. Simply reach the edge of your screen, and your mouse teleports to your other Mac! The pasteboard can even be synchronized between the computers.

It uses Bonjour to find available hosts. For controlling them, it catches the events of the master computer, sends me on the network using TCP, and uses some native CoreGraphics calls on the slave computer.

This app allows you to share a keyboard, mouse and clipboard/pasteboard between two computers simply by having the computers connected the same network (keyboard/mouse/clipboard data is sent between computers across the network). The major alternatives are Synergy and ShareMouse. I used Synergy years ago when it was free/opensource to use one keyboard and mouse between a windows and linux machine (each had their own monitor). Much faster than using a hardware KVM (which I also had). It worked great. Recently I ended up with multiple Macs at my desk, each with their own monitors. I just wanted trouble-free keyboard/mouse sharing over the network. Synergy is now a paid product (perpetual license for current major version...pay to upgrade to next major version). If you want encryption of network traffic between computer you need to pay for the more expensive license. The other popular option is called ShareMouse. Also a paid option around $50 bucks for the basic one (they have a free license but doesn't work if any of your computers have more than 1 monitor). Teleport is fairly polished (UI), free and open source. You can find latest releases and source on github. Teleport doesn't have a lot of fancy features but in my experience is super solid with the basics. - supports keyboard/mouse sharing - pasteboard/clipboard sharing (text only) - encryption (you need to provide certs, so not super user friendly to setup) The biggest limiting factor of Teleport is lack of Linux or Windows support. So this is really only an option if you are in a 100% mac environment. The paid apps have other fancier features that certain power users might need...for instance maintaining multiple configs if you are moving your laptop between home and work and want to share keyboard/mouse with desktop computers in both locations (different monitor layouts, different computers part of the group, etc). Bottom line... if you are in a pure mac environment with multiple computers at your desk, each with their own monitor(s)...you should definitely give teleport a try.
