Multi-document spelling checker, LaTeX-aware.

Overview

Excalibur is a Mac spelling checker for plain text documents. It will spell check documents created by any text editor such as BBEdit, Alpha, Emacs or MPW

It will also spell check the clipboard, making it a useful spelling checker for mail programs such as Eudora and news readers such as NewsWatcher. It is also a very good LaTeX spelling checker

LaTeX is a collection of typesetting macros. If you're not a LaTeX user, you should turn off the option that makes Excalibur aware of LaTeX. See LaTeX Options for more information

It is a stand-alone spelling checker that you can use with many other applications. If you want to use it for spell checking the clipboard, it's probably best to turn on the Open the Clipboard option or the Open the Clipboard and Go option. See Start-up Actions for more information. Excalibur supports Word Services which streamlines its operation with MT-NewsWatcher, Eudora Pro, Communicate, Nisus Writer, and AppleWorks

Developer's Note: This version of Excalibur does not work on Catalina. It will work on Mojave, but it has an issue with APFS (Apple File System). If you have a USB drive formatted for HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) or a .dmg file formatted for HFS+, Excalibur will successfully save the file there. You can then copy the file back to your APFS drive

What's new in Excalibur

Version 4.0.7:
  • Fixes a bug that could cause Excalibur to hang when there was a syntax error at the end of a file.

Too bad spelltools does not work with 9.1, Excalibur is a clunky replacement. Instead of correcting spelling on the fly one must save the file to the hard disc then open it, selelct all to put it in the clipboard, then run excalibur. Newertech seems o be gone but if someone could make spelltools work wiith 9.1 or 10 I would be so thankful.

Excalibur has carried me through e-mails, forums, and virtually everything that requires text that is not in a major page layout program with good built in spell checkers, like InDesign. I simply think Excalibur is indespensible and one of the most valuable software additions to the new Panther Mac OS.
