0.4.5

Sega Genesis/Megadrive emulator.

Overview

Generator is compatible with the majority of Genesis software. It supports full sound emulation, with accurate emulation of both the YM2612 FM chip and the SN76489 PSG. Two different video rendering engines are provided; one for maximum speed, and one for accuracy. In addition, support for Cheat Codes is included, as is a comprehensive database of cheats which can be activated directly from the emulator. Both .SMD and .BIN format ROMs are supported, and Gzip compressed ROMs can be used transparently.

I asked the author why I had to continually update their software and if they could do a software update program for their software to make the lives of their users much easier instead of having to download a new copy almost monthly, unstuff it and replace the old version. It gets even more complex with the Emulator Enhancer add on which also needs regular updates. This is the reply that I recieved when I voiced these concerns: "I see no need for automatic updating, as such a feature provides a whole lot of dead traffic to my web site - which has to be paid for - and is a relatively minor issue as anyone who looks at my web page can quickly see what the latest versions are." -Richard Bannister March 13, 2006 So all we, the users, are to the author is traffic. This concept of visiting a website would be a decent idea in the ideal world but must be a complete headache for the modem users, the people that lack a constant internet connection and the people who actually want to play these emulators. If the author desires so much traffic then maybe he can do so by providing some content on the webpage such as more information/help files/forums on the products he offers instead of forced updates. I want to run an application that works, not a car that needs tuneups, upgrades add ons and trips to get serviced.

I'm sure he also released all this software as freeware since he hates the mac community so much. Automatic update would make for a lot of bloatware and since he isn't making money off this how would he get his money back for the dead traffic? I would love having too many updates over none.

It says you can input cheat codes but I don't see where. How can I access this?

When I try to run it, it automatically quits with the message "The application Generator has unexpectedly quit. The system and other applications have not been affected" so I ca't use it.

Actually, just uncheck that "Verify Checksum" box, when you go to the Disk Copy menu: Image>Mount Image... and it should mount dmgs. You'll (obviously) have to do it through Disk Copy, you can't just double click on the .dmg file like normal.

Outstanding Bannister emulator, as usual. Only a few complaints: If you play in OS X there's a nasty frame skipping issue that happens after you play it for a while. It says in the read me file that it's fixed, but it's probably just for OS 9. Also, in Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, you get stuck in an infinite loop every time you enter the casino bonus stage. It's quite annoying. Finally, there's a glitch in the Mortal Kombat games where one hit defeats your opponent (luckily, Bannister's other emulator, Genesis Plus, fixed that). Other than that, it's got great compatibility, a code menu, and is very stable. Nicely done.
