NotePlan overview

NotePlan is designed to make your task planning more productive. It solves problems like bloated, ever-growing to-do lists.

  • Modern Writing - Enjoy a full writing area with Markdown and injected flavour for productivity.
  • Calendar Notes - A calendar shows you where the action is. Jump right into a day to manage it by writing notes into each day.
  • Backlog Notes - Save away your backlogs and general notes behind the daily planning and apart from the calendar.
Features
  • Full, modern writing tool included for every day of a month - NotePlan will give you the convenience of a modern writing editor supporting markdown. Add formatting to your task lists and notes to keep it better organized.
  • Monthly calendar overview with color-coded daily note content - See a summary of your notes and color coded lists in a monthly calendar view. Use keyboard shortcuts to navigate and quickly jump into a day to review or edit it. The calendar will also show you, if you missed out on some tasks, so nothing important slips from your mind.
  • Schedule tasks to stay organized - If you couldn't finish a task, don't leave it unmanaged on the list. Re-schedule it to another day. Or, if you manage a backlog, schedule a todo directly from there onto your calendar.
  • Backlogs, drafts, bug lists or just text notes, apart from the calendar - Some information is not related to a day and should be kept separated from the calendar. Like bug lists or project backlogs. They can be managed in NotePlan and scheduled directly into the calendar, when required. Notes can be organized by tagging them. In the overview you can filter your notes by tags.
  • Your notes are not saved on our servers. You will find them safe and sound in your iCloud Drive.
  • Integrations to useful apps like iCalender, Reminders, and more are available.

What’s new in version 3.9.1

Updated on May 18 2023

The latest NotePlan release introduces a multi-day view to let you plan your time blocks across up to 7 days. NotePlan 3.9.1 also allows you to complete tasks right from your timeline on macOS!

What’s more, you can now easily switch between a list view and a timeline view to get a better overview of your day and your workload. Plus, on iOS, you can view and add meeting notes right from the timeline view.

Multi-day view: introducing weekly time blocking — Plan time blocks across up to 7 days

Planning time blocks on macOS just got an upgrade! You can now see up to 7 days on your timeline with all events, reminders, and tasks. The new multi-day view lets you look ahead and plan better. Don’t want to do a task today? Time-block it for the day after tomorrow at 2 pm, just by dragging and dropping it from your daily note to a slot on the timeline on the right.

NotePlan 3.9.1 also comes with an option to switch between list and timeline view (in the sidebar). Use the settings icon top right of the calendar to change what should be displayed in the sidebar. This lets you open for example a weekly note, switch to timeline (instead of list) and plan your complete week by dragging tasks into the timeline.

Finally, a new context menu on macOS lets you view and delete events, reminders, and time blocks on your timeline. You can even mark time blocks as completed!

Meeting notes arrive on iOS — A better way to keep track of meeting notes on the go.

Meeting notes let you connect an event to a note to ensure you never lose track of information or actions related to your meeting. On iOS you can now easily add or view the meeting notes from the timeline with a couple of taps.

Improvements & Fixes:
  • Even faster performance for users with a lot of notes
  • Added x-callback-url to hide the NotePlan badge (noteplan://x-callback-url/iconBadge/?enable=no)
  • Added a context menu option "Show events" on iPadOS to show only the timeline of a calendar day (long-press a day in the calendar top right). So you can switch the timeline inside a project note.
  • Fixed an issue with renaming files and folders
  • Fixed duplicate references when periodic notes are turned off
  • Fixed an issue where images (attachments) were sometimes deleted when a new note was immediately moved
  • Fixed an issue with dragging tasks into the timeline from a Split View on iPadOS
  • Fixed an issue with date detection in the title of an event
  • Fixed an issue with changing recurring events and reminders
  • Updated the German translation
  • Fixed a couple of rare crashes related to Regular Expressions

It doesn't look like MacUpdate has been keeping this app up to date. It's now up to version 3.8 and is still actively developed. Version 3 is a big upgrade (in terms of functionality and price, now being a subscription), but I couldn't live without it.

With the new 'markdown live rendering' (i.e. you see rich text, not markdown even though that's what it's using), this great task management app has become even more user-friendly. The same markdown rendering is also now live on the iPhone/iPad apps as well.

This is a great app for getting my tasks down and then organising them. Uses markdown as well as the built-in Reminders and Calendar across Mac and iOS

This has been such a wonderful discovery. I enjoy being able to mix notes, to-dos, links, etc. in the same area just for the day. The program keeps getting better.

I would have to say this is the best Task Manager app I’ve ever used (and yes I said the same thing about Things when it was still shiny and new after the upgrade to version 3). This works like a combination of TaskPaper (outline your tasks in plain text) and Things (get to see your Calendar events and todos in the same space as well as having a dedicated page for Today). I’ve only been using it for a few days but have already bought the iOS app and see myself buying the Mac app once the demo is over.

I've had NotePlan for my Mac and iPhone since the betas. I use it in conjunction with Things 3. The beauty of NotePlan for me is that it allows me to break down tasks for projects quite easily, and then work through them on a calendar-ToDo list. I could do this with Things or OmniFocus, but I like how NotePlan allows me to delineate my tasks within a project without over crowding a GTD program like Things. I may not need both, but I am more productive using them together. One more thing: the developer is great. He seems to be genuinely interested in user input, and her responds to queries and suggestions quickly and thoroughly.
