I test again and again to make sure all the data is erased. First download super eraser on my Mac and erase a hard drive. Then run a data recovery program to deep scan the erased hard drive. No trace found! So, this is good tool for data erasure before selling or disposing old Mac, USB, hard drive, camera, etc.

If this app does a traditional multi-pass overwrite it will shorten your SSD's life.

No different than any other eraser - overwriting many times with any of 'em takes a toll on an SSD’s lifespan.

WOW! After months of my complaining that I wasn't getting them, I've finally received a "response to your post" email!!!

Exactly. It needed to be made clear that this app is detrimental to SSDs and should be used ONLY with HDDs.

All drives wear out faster the more they're used. Frequent multi-pass erasing of a hard disk will cause premature failure too.

While SSD's have a limited number of write cycles, I wouldn't hesitate to wipe a SSD if there was something on it I really needed to insure couldn't be recovered .

I wouldn't do that often on a SSD I was planning to keep, but if you're wiping a card or drive in an item you're selling, WHO CARES if it slightly shortens the item's lifespan as long as your data is secure and you feel at ease?

And it is just slightly. If you overwrite a drive 5 times, that's the same as filling it with data 5 times. The wiping process isn't any more destructive than normal writing.

SSD's don't need more than one overwrite, and even modern hard disks only need a few to be truly safe.

NO ONE SHOULD EVER USE THE GUTMANN METHOD!!!

It shouldn't even be offered in erasing software anymore, but developers feel pressured to include it because ignorant users keep demanding it. The dev's of this software know it's useless, but included that option anyway.

I don't think I've used this app, I've been using ShredIt X.
And yup, the option to overwrite 35 times is there for anyone stupid enough to use it.

IMO anyone who feels they need to wipe their data 35 times ought to have their device seized, 'cause they're definitely guilty of somethin' nefarious.

Strange that 3 very short, 5-star reviews were posted on the same day by reviewers who have no other MacUpdate activity. I'm interested in this app, but I don't trust these reviews; I'll look elsewhere to try to find more helpful reviews. MacUpdate, are you keeping an eye on this sort of thing?
