I've been using f.lux for several years, now. It works great and is updated regularly. And it's free: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/37261/f-lux. What's more, it's backwards compatible to OS X 10.7 Lion.

Well, I have survived until now without using the App Store... I'm sorry, but I'll think I'll continue this way. ;-) f.lux is great and free.

It's a shame that the developer does not have a trial version ( try before you buy ). I am sure that many here can afford the 3 bucks and also don't seem to worry about wasting money. It still seems that the developper could offer a time limited try me version.

That's a restriction of the Mac App Store, which does not allow for trial versions of software. To provide a trial version the developer would have to code a separate version and make it available through his web site, which would also require purchasing and licensing services—an expensive proposition for some people., especially now that Kagi is gone. That said, I agree a trial version is desirable; to do that the developer would do well to avoid the App Store. Then again, what do you want for three bucks?

Could the developer not offer a free but more restricted version? Maybe just allow one type of change among the several that the full version offers? I'm not a programmer, so I don't know if that would still be as time-consuming as a comprehensive trial version. But I've seen "limited feature" free versions of software in the MAS, so this seems like a possible option.
