Remove gigabytes of superfluous old files.

Overview

VersionsManager is an application that allows you to inspect and optionally delete old 'versions' of your documents that have been stored automatically by your Mac.

Since OS X 10.7 'Lion', most Mac apps automatically store not only the latest version of any document, but all previous intermediate versions are stored too. These previous versions can add up to many gigabytes of 'wasted' disk-space since it is common to have many hundred old versions for the files you have been working on. For most files you know that the latest version is 'good' and that you won't ever need access to previous versions anymore. Even if you do need an old version of a file, you can restore old versions if you have enabled the 'TimeMachine' backup-feature of OS X. Also, these old versions are useless as a back-up because they are stored on your main disk and are automatically deleted when you delete the corresponding file. VersionsManager can display all files which also have additional 'old' versions stored. You can also inspect all old versions and compare them to see what has changed. If you are sure you do not need those old versions you can delete them individually or all at once. If you are are sure you don't need any old versions of your files you can even delete all old versions on you Mac at once, reclaiming gigabytes of space with a single mouse click.

Note: This application contains in-app and/or external module purchases.

What's new in VersionsManager

Version 1.1.6:
  • Dramatically improved performance when inspecting versions of large files
  • Display MB with base 1000 instead of 1024 to match Finder's size display
  • Fixed crash when comparing file versions and Xcode is not installed
  • Display file sizes in MB instead of bytes in file inspection window

Most helpful

I didn’t realize how much space duplicates and old versions of files take up on my computer. This app has helped me clear out around 15 GB of space on my HDD and I will be forever grateful as I burn through my HDD space very quickly. I highly recommend this app!!

Hi VersionsManager is a very helpful Tool for everyone that work with Document Types like Office,Txt, and hole other Files that can be edited in Osx. Apple mean that they must make every Document save for the user and take some Snapshots from every editing, these Snapshots can (can not must) use many many Space on your Disk . It is simple if you not work on your Mac with such Documents VersionsManager can't free much Space but if you work every Day with such Document Types you can free with VersionsManager many Space. I use every Day many Types of Documents and change them often so here I can use that Tool very well, VersionsManager does a good Job here. Andre

Note that Apple does not save the versions in full but as increments, hence the reported savings are not real. For example I had a file with 19 versions claiming I would save nearly 9GB of space. Upon deleting the versions (with Keynote), I only saved a few hundred megabytes (or less) since all of the versions were nearly identical. So, it is useful to find those version files, but not very useful for finding a lot of wasted space, IMHO.

for most files the calculation is 100% correct since the system is not able to (easily) save just the 'increments' (e.g. pictures, movies, etc).

thanks for bringing it to our attention that the calculation is not correct for Keynote files, we will investigate there.

The software is free but the statement "Remove gigabytes of superfluous old files" is misleading as this option is not free but has to be purchased for $5. The free version will only find filed and not delete them, The statement should be removed or amended.

we believe having a free version to try out the app and see if it is actually useful is valuable to our potential users.

your statement seems to imply that you are somehow angry that a free version exists and you would rather prefer to be forced to pay for something of unknown utility. thats weird.

Only the Trial version is free. The trial version will only list the files that have multiple versions. It will not delete them. Full functionality is $5. To use this product to delete multiple versions do the following:

-Use the program to find and select a file with multiple versions.
- Use the program to locate the selected file in the Finder
- Open the file
- Under the 'File' menu, chooseRevert To-> 'Browse All Versions'. This will open a Time Machine interface and find the files.

- Bring the cursor to the top of the screen to show the pop down menu.
- Under 'File' choose 'Revert To'->'Delete this Version'. Ignore that it might be greyed out.
- Hold down the 'Option' key on your keyboard. It will change to 'Delete All Versions'.
- Click it. That's it. Choose 'Done to exit at the bottom.

It takes longer to read this than to do it. Once you have done it once it is real fast and easy.

While I don't appreciate the way this product is presented - i.e. free but costs $5 to get advertised functionality, if you have a lot of versions to delete, it might be worth it. However if you only have a few files, I would recommend the built in technique above.

I totally agree with Jimw. I just wanted to add that in case you're looking for a possibility to get rid of all your file versions and you're not easy with the terminal, just use Onyx. Under "Automation" you'll find the possibility to delete all versions of the documents you created. Just check the item and the trick is done. There might be other free applications able to delete versions from your Mac.

Thank you for your positive feedback. I am also a great proponent of Onyx. It is one of my 'must have' utilities.
