This site is beginning to resemble a social media site, rather than serious comment on software! You only have to look down the page to see what I'm talking about, one person makes a comment doubting the validity of some reviews/comments and immediately somebody has to put their point of view forward! Come on! we're all citizens of the wonderful world of Mac, if a person has a point of view, let it be, they ARE entitled, if you believe differently, you don't have to jump on your keyboard and demonstrate your 'superior knowledge' I remember a time when we Mac users were far fewer than now and were a much friendlier bunch! Let's just use this facility for which it was intended, to review and inform other Mac users about the software!

-> NOT free. It costs $9.99 up front.
-> DANGER! This version of Elmedia Video Player contains and uses Adobe Flash Player plugin version 30.0.0.113 from June 7, 2018. This version of Flash contains the following security flaws, some of which are CRITICAL:
• CVE-2018-5007 - Type Confusion, Arbitrary Code Execution
• CVE-2018-5008 - Out-of-bounds read, Information Disclosure
• CVE-2018-12824 - Out-of-bounds read, Information Disclosure
• CVE-2018-12825 - Security bypass, Security Mitigation Bypass
• CVE-2018-12826 - Out-of-bounds read, Information Disclosure
• CVE-2018-12827 - Out-of-bounds read, Information Disclosure
• CVE-2018-12828 - Use of a component with a known vulnerability, Privilege Escalation
• CVE-2018-15967 - Privilege Escalation, Information Disclosure
• CVE-2018-15978 - Out-of-bounds Read, Information Disclosure
• CVE-2018-15982 - Use after free, Arbitrary Code Execution
• CVE-2018-15983 - Insecure Library Loading (DLL hijacking), Privilege Escalation
• CVE-2019-7090 - Out-of-bounds read, Information Disclosure

Adobe Flash is the single most dangerous 'professional' piece of software on any computer platform, specifically because of its consistently important and critical security holes, some of which have been exploited in-the-wild. This is one reason Adobe is discontinuing Flash as of January 1, 2020. Adobe itself always recommends that Flash users remain up-to-date with the latest version of their Flash plugin. IMHO it is IRRESPONSIBLE for any software program to include the Adobe Flash plugin without keeping it immediately up-to-date. That is blatantly NOT the case with Elmedia Video Player. As such, I'm giving it ½ star. It deserves zero.

* Grateful thanks to tehabe for pointing out the presence of the Adobe Flash plugin in Elmedia Video Player.

Please note: My statement that it costs $9.99 is based upon the fact that the Eltima website specifically directs those interested in their 'Free' Elmedia Video Player to THIS web page to download it:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/elmedia-universal-video-player/id937759555?mt=12

Note on that page, AND at the Apple Mac App Store the price of $9.99. Inexplicably, the app is re-named "Elmedia:universal video player", a name that does not exist at the Eltima website. WHY is this the case? IMHO this looks like Bait & Switch.

There IS a free app actually called "Elmedia Video Player" at the Mac App Store if you dig around for it. The descriptions at the Mac App Store for BOTH "Elmedia Video Player AND "Elmedia:universal video player" are IDENTICAL. WHY is this the case? Why the utter confusion? I personally see no reason to trust this company.

We want to reply on your comment:
-> We have a free player with in-app purchase, as stated in the description on the page. In App Store the application is also located in the “free section” and fully complies with the rules for storing the software as free.
->Thank you for reporting about this problem! With the next update we will fix it. But we'd like to draw your attention to the fact that if you do not open Flash files, the plugin won't be loaded and it won't damage your system.

This Flash plugin is used ONLY when you play local Flash files, that is, those files that you have on your hard drive. The browser window uses the plugin that is installed in your system.

This is an odd piece of software, I always look inside the bundle (especially for video player because I want to know if they are based on some other player.) This one includes a Flash plugin, the version is 10.3. Which was released in 2011 and updated until October 2012. No idea of course what Elmedia Player is really doing with Flash but it should be up to date, also on a local machine and especially in a application which can play videos from a server.

Elmedia Player started as SWF&FLV Player and it was designed specifically to play Flash videos. But since then, we've added support for other formats, added new features and redesigned the application completely etc. However, the video player still can play SWF and FLV videos. We are planning to update Flash plugin in the near future. Please note, it is used only for playback, Elmedia Player doesn't use the plugin in the "Browser" mode.

Thanks guys for this player, it's really a good piece. I was skeptical about downloading at first because it was free but it actually played the video in the format I wanted without me installing codecs as usual.

I've never had to "install codecs" to display video on a Mac, with the exception of Flash. I think you're a shill.

In my opinion, this application is capable to playback any stored file on my Mac. Plus, I don't see any reasonable hint not to try it.

Once again I decided to test Elmedia Video Player. I tried to open some .mov clips that I made with QT 7 Pro back in the 2000s, EVP wouldn't play any of them. Then I tried VLC and they all played. You can believe the trumped up hype if you wish but there are better alternatives. VLC. MPlayerX. Kodi. Movist.

And the icing on the Elmedia cake is that it changed all my video files' default app to Elmedia Video Player, AND it changed all the icons to that hideous play button with orange background! First of all, what gives you the right??? Second of all, take your junkware and stuff it. You give Mac developers a black eye.

Penguirl, if you have any problems with Elmedia Player please send email directly to our support team and they will help you to fix the problem (support@eltima.com).
To change the default app you need to right-click necessary video file, then choose Open With and click Other. In the invoked window you can choose another player and put a tick in the checkbox next to "Always Open With".

Your english is as bad as the developer's. Somehow I doubt that it is a coincidence.

I see no indication that the developer has poor English skills,
the description is written in proper English.

And if that comment had been posted by the developer, I would have expected to see a 4-5 star REVIEW, not just a comment.

Maybe your comprehension of the English language needs improvement.

You're not terribly adept at spotting astroturfing, are you?

Oh and BTW, I have communicated directly with the developer and his/her English was atrocious. Unfortunately I don't save things like that so I can't share it with you. Though I'm not sure your comprehension would be up to the task.

You have no idea what the definition of astroturfing is, do you?

I know what you meant, but you used the wrong word.

Astroturf refers to apparently grassroots-based citizen groups or coalitions that are primarily conceived, created and/or funded by corporations, industry trade associations, political interests or public relations firms.

And I reiterate that if they were a shill they would have posted a 5-star review.
There's no point in faking a glowing review with no rating.

Believe it or not there's more than one person on the planet with poor English skills, many of them were born in the USA!
The fact that ONE WORD is misspelled and that the developer may have imperfect English skills is not proof of a cover-up!

And I believe I am rather adept at spotting shills - I exposed two yesterday on this site. And they both posted 5-star reviews!
