Netgear Genie overview
Netgear Genie makes getting the most out of your home network fun and easy. More than four million downloads of the Genie app lets users easily monitor, connect, and control their home network from a PC, Mac, tablet, or smartphone. With Netgear Genie you can share and stream music or videos, diagnose and repair network issues, set up parental controls, and more.
You can use the Genie desktop apps to do the following:
- Automatically repair common WiFi network problems
- Get easy access to router features like parental controls, guest access, broadband usage meter, speed test, AirPrint compatibility, and more
- The network map shows all the devices on your home network
Note: To manage your router settings with the Genie app, you might need to update to new router firmware when it is available.

I first installed this several years ago, with the purchase of a Netgear router. I was never able to use it, since it never took long before it started eating processor cycles, and I had to force it to quit. Since then, I have made several attempts to uninstall it, without success. Neither Netgear nor their Community Support Forum have been of any help. Fortunately, perhaps, it's been replaced by a new app called Nighthawk. Never tried Nighthawk.

eI ended up purchasing an Eero router, too many problems with the Netgear switching from PC to Mac.

As is the case with many browser-based apps, they are dumbed down, "lite" versions of any useful interface or software. Netgear Genie is no different.

The "new" version looks identical to the 2016 and maybe even the 2015 versions. I can't tell any difference.
