Findings overview

Findings is a notebook app for scientists. When running experiments in a lab, it is crucial to keep track of what one is doing, to be able to later reproduce the results, assemble and publish them. This is what lab notebooks are for. For as long as science has existed, lab notebooks have been made of paper. There is something great about paper, and the freedom and flexibility it affords. But in 2014, paper starts to show its limits in other areas where computers have taken over: storing results, analyzing data, searching, replicating, sharing, preserving, and more. Findings ambition is simple: make your computer a better tool than paper to run experiments and keep lab records.

What’s new in version 2.1

Updated on Sep 28 2018

Version 2.1:
New:
  • Collection colors. Findings offers several pre-defined colors you can apply to a collection. Any entry or protocol in that collection will then be displayed with that color. When an entry belongs to multiple collections, the color can be set explicitely in the collection menu for the entry, and if not, it will be the color of the innermost collection if applicable, or else one of the collection will be picked consistently as the one to use for the entry color
  • Dark Mode. You can set the appearance to light or dark in the Findings preferences, even if you run a macOS version older than 10.14 Mojave. On Mojave, Findings will adjust to the system preference by default, but the setting can be overriden in the Findings preferences
  • Support for the accent color set in the system preferences when using macOS 10.14 Mojave. Findings will use the accent color as the new color for entries (for protocols, a different color will then be used as needed)
  • Entries with active content for the current day now have a prominent 'TODAY' badge in the entry list and stand out
  • There is now a '+' button in the editor toolbar, that replicates the options of the 'Insert' menu and of the '+' button that's also in the left gutter of the editor
  • All the options from the 'Document' menu are now available in the contextual menu for the entry list in the middle pane
  • Menu item for the release notes. Very meta
  • Double-click to edit tables
  • Compatibility with macOS 10.14 Mojave. There were some minor issues to fix
Improved:
  • Buttons for table editing and copying moved to the left side of the editor, so there is no more overlay and shading of the table itself
  • Do not interrupt numbered list with sticky content, which allows to have stickies as part of numbered lists, and is consistent with Findings 1 behavior
  • Better handling of document selection in the middle pane when changing selection in the sidebar
  • All links to findingsapp.com now use https
  • Improved colors for stickies
  • More consistent use of colors throughout the user interface
  • Toggle button for the filters is now separate from the search button
  • Allow all text formatting options for headers
  • Tweaks to various icons
  • Clearer message when using a link for a Findings 1 serial number
  • Updating the about window to use the new icon and swift
  • Adding "backdoor" to enable custom folder location for documents, without having to go through Dropbox authentication
Fixed:
  • Correct formatting of date intervals, for users who set a custom date format in the system preferences
  • Problem with missing lines when pasting text into a document, for macOS 10.11.6 users. The bug was introduced in the previous 2.1 beta
  • Inconsistent sorting of entries by date
  • Links to other Findings documents now always open in the running application, instead of sometimes launching a different copy of the application that may be on the current volume or another one
  • Opening those internal links is also faster
  • The collection popup menu in the document header could sometimes not give the option to add the entry or protocol to subcollections when it was already in the parent collection
  • Inactive date selection interface in print and pdf export. This was a bug introduced in the 2.1 beta build 5523. Thanks to our awesome beta testers for reporting
  • Contextual menu for the entry list now properly triggered by control-click (it was only working with right-click on 2-button mouse, or two-finger taps on a trackpad)
  • When tpying using a keyboard input source (e.g. Japanese, Korean, accents, etc), the current paragraph would be deleting when the entire text of the paragraph was selected
  • Select the 'Timers' item in the sidebar when creating a new timer, so that the new timer is actually visible
  • Properly locks title and summary fields when status is not ongoing or in review, just like it does for the main body of the entry
  • Properly locks experiments marked as completed in Findings 1, that were not considered locked in Findings 2 even though their status was correctly set to completed
  • Clicking on newly created attachment was wrongly invoking the open file dialog, which was annoying and very confusing
  • Showing the 'Free Trial' information overlay even when already using a Pro license
  • Fixes potential issues with the setup and tear down of the main window, in particular when toggling Dropbox sync
  • Spurious today badge when the word 'today' is present in a document summary
  • Bug in collection color shown in the document header
  • Multiple identical color wells in the font color menu palette
  • Incomplete refresh when changing the appearance setting while browsing protocols, then returning to entries
  • Crash when navigating the entries very quickly (this was the most frequent crash remaining in Findings 2.0.7)
  • Crash with import of some Word documents

If you are a researcher then keep in mind that electronic records need to be tamper-proof if they are to be used for establishing discoveries. That's also why you are not allowed to rip out pages from your lab book. Many institutions have rules on using real paper-bound lab books, so inform yourself first.

Absolutely awesome and beautiful find – available in version 2 now! And still works in a mixed OS combination with El Capitan and High Sierra. I'm using it for project management – and just loving it !!

Great app for e-ab books. I love the fact that the app includes a protocol section. Really convenient to manage multiple experiments and keep track of everything. I already use it to keep things in sync through dropbox and I can't wait for the iOS version!
