Slugline

1.0.7
29 October 2017

Minimal screenwriting app.

Overview

Slugline is a minimal, distraction-free environment for the most important part of screenwriting: the writing part.

Slugline works with plain text. It automatically turns your writing into a properly formatted screenplay, without you ever needing to press the Tab key or touch the mouse.

No buttons. No settings. Just writing.

What's new in Slugline

Version 1.3.1 (1.0.7):

Note: The downloadable demo is version 1.0.7; the version available for purchase on the Mac App Store is version 1.3.1.

New
  • Slugline scrolls smoother and keeps up with your typing better, even on very large, complex documents.
  • Slugline should be less greedy with your laptop’s battery.
  • Undo now undoes blocks of typing, rather than one letter at a time.
Improved
  • Typing the @ symbol, the trick for forcing a Character element, now brings up an auto-complete menu of any forced Characters already in your screenplay.
  • After pressing Return to choose a Scene Heading prefix (INT, EXT, etc.) from the auto-complete menu, the cursor now remains on the line, so you can keep typing your scene heading.
Fixed
  • Undoing the creation of a Character/Dialogue pair no longer inserts random garbage into your screenplay.
  • We fixed a potential memory leak.
  • When reverting to a saved document, the “Loading” spinner should go away now, rather than stay there for four to eight years.
  • We fixed some compatibility issues with macOS 10.13 High Sierra that were causing crashes around parentheticals.

Too pricey in my opinion. Ulysses is $44.99 and Scrivener is $45. Those programs do a lot more. Well designed though and slick.

They do different things, not more. Slugline specifically formats for screenplays. For example, it knows to switch from scene heading format to action format, and switches from character names to dialogue format automatically. That's what *all* good screenwriting apps do, and neither Ulysses not Scrivener do this. (And Scrivener is blessedly clear about this in its documentation.)

This is one of the small lists of apps that I consider for my needs to be perfect. On top of software that does what it says, the developers respond to feedback and frequently improves the app. I've done a review on the app on youtube under AppLookReviews and you can also go to the review from the link below to get an idea of Slugline: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPCX60tg9vI
