Hmm... How about just using Apple's Disk Utility app. It can erase files using either a 1/7/35 pass/re-write over data options.. 35, Guttmann method not available in this app from the description it seems but good old Disk Utility has it!

When you sell a computer, or just need to overwrite content of the drive the best option, depending on OS, i.e. 10.6 and below is to put in the install DVD and boot from that DVD run disk utility and do the erase... or

If your 10.7+ You can make a bootable dvd/usb drive to do the same with the excellent LionDiskMaker app or just boot into the recovery partition and do the same.

Unless I am missing something, you don't need to waste $7 on an app you can't demo when your default OS install has everything you need and more... and it's not via command line or anything like that. Disk Utility is a GUI easy as it comes app to work with.

Trust Apple's product or a, no offense, random developer's product to secure your files from recovery?

If I am wrong please let me know but the description just seems like a less featured Disk Utility....

Most people have some data that they would rather not share with others such as passwords, personal information, classified documents from work, financial records, self-written poems, the list continues. Perhaps you have saved some of this information on your computer where it is conveniently at your reach, but when the time comes to remove the data from your hard disk, things get a bit more complicated and maintaining your privacy is not as simple as it may have seemed at first. Your first thought may be that when you 'delete' the file, the data is gone. Not quite, when you delete a file, the operating system does not really remove the file from the disk; it only removes the reference of the file from the file system table. The file remains on the disk until another file is created over it, and even after that, it might be possible to recover data by studying the magnetic fields on the disk platter surface. Before the file is overwritten, anyone can easily retrieve it with a disk maintenance or an undelete utility.

  • 7 Phases DoD method secure data erase
