Desktop Groups keeps the chaos off of your desktop. Keep related files in groups. The app lets you create groups of related files on your desktop. You can freely move groups of files around on your desktop and add or remove files via drag & drop.

Each group has a title so that you can organize your files any way you like. For example, you could create separate groups for each project you are working on, or add separate groups for photos and text documents. If you frequently take screenshots, that would be another good fit for a group. The possibilities are endless.

basically, very nice idea! finally a modern approach to de-clutter my desktop. underlying principle reminds me of spring-loaded folders of older mac os.

regretfully, the software is still stuck in alpha stage. some impressions and thoughts:
- instead of using aliases or links to the original files/folders there has to be a physical folder "Desktop Groups" containing the different files/folders. you can set another location for this folder but you cannot have files/folders from different "real" locations in a group.
- i can't move files/folders into a folder contained in a group. i have to open the group, open the folder by double-clicking on it, and then copy/move my stuff in there. this is really annoying.
- groups pop up on mouse-over like drop-down menus. don't want that. i want to use the "enlarge"-button in the title bar.
- however, using the "enlarge"-button sometimes works, sometimes not.
- resizing a group window is a real pain. it eventually works (sometimes not), but you'll really have to point and shoot at a very small spot/corner.
- no separate color settings for different group title bars. it's all or nothing. this would be nice for peeps like me, using colors for different categories.
- only 2 settings in the prefs (use dock or menu bar icon, visibility option).

i guess, if they put more time and energy into this tool, it'll fly. currently, it's not even a beta version, imho. improve it, and i'll be happy to adjust my ratings.

My comment disappeared so I hope this doesn't duplicate - anyhow: I thought this would be like Overflow but with multiple windows, but I find that ALL the original files have to reside inside this "Desktop Groups" folder.

Yes, files you drag into a group are moved to the "Desktop Groups" folder on your desktop. You can move that folder to somewhere else if you don't want to have it on your desktop. I considered having an option to not move files (i.e. use aliases), but ran into problems with app sandboxing... Feel free to send me an email if you have more questions about the app.

i want suggest some implementations for a better use.
1) open folder direct from the desktop group
in my copy this not work.
2) change the color of titles for each group.
3) use the service from a contextual menu, for the service and automator actions, as rename folder and files or resize, etc...
4) information about the files as dimension etc direct in the groups.

Very useful program - exactly what I was looking for! Wishlist for improvement:

1. Put preferences in menubar rather than in the individual pseudo-windows. It took me quite a while to find them.

2. Add a means of sorting the members of groups (by filename, date, etc.).

3. Add an option to turn off the annoying beep when adding files or folders.

4, Very annoying start-up on first use. Start the program and you suddenly see a group on your desktop with six generic pictures from someone else's vacation. You can't close the group or delete the pictures without dragging the pictures to the desktop - and you don't figure that out without effort. There's got to be a better way to introduce folks to how the program works.

Once I got the hang of the thing (and got rid of the vacation photos), it's great, and I look forward to future improvements.

oh and also, there's no sign of the contextual menu with more options that this program supposedly adds (according to the description above)

Thanks for the input. Some of those suggestions are already on my list. You can open the context menu by control-clicking inside the group. Then select "Show View Options" from the menu.

Desktop Groups is on sale today at the Mac App Store for $0.99. I'm not sure but I think it's for today only (Oct 25, 2012).

I agree. It's time all software developers offered a demo. Going to final sale without a trial is not fair. The big guys do it for their big apps, smaller developers can become big developers as their customer base grows. But in this instance, while I like the program, I am giving it a miss because there's no trial.

This has been released before it's ready, since there is nothing about it on the developer's site, and there's no help. And it's another programme without a trial download. It could be very useful, but...
