It looks like Abine is transitioning this product... the plug-in is only available for Chrome/Firefox now (as of this posting) and it looks like you need to create an account with them to access the download for the browser and other features... I guess we'll see where this goes.

Other than that, this has been my go-to privacy plug-in for a few years now and continues to work okay in Safari (if you still have a copy of the plug-in).

My comments and reasons are already listed below. I'm simply used to commenting when I have not yet tested a new version. I dumped this plugin about two subversions ago as a major privacy risk.

DO NOT USE! Although this plugin may screen out other trackers, there are security sources (and other plugins) that all show that this plugin is a tracker itself. Tracking can just as effectively be blocked by such as Ghostery and AdBlock (not AdBlock Plus).

And by the by, Ghostery and AdBlock are widely available for all browsers... not just Safari. Double check the source for any plugin claiming to be specifically for one browser... then search the plugin on the internet and go to the source only. You might also look for HTTPS Everywhere for automatically seeking encrypted connections (if available) at all sites you visit.

Seriously? A "Do Not Track" app that Tracks you? Thats disturbing.

Maybe the Developer would like to comment? Hello Developer?

A comment from the developer is unlikely (and untrustworthy). My information is based on using Ghostery and AdBlock and direct dipping into to the protocol streams while browsing to examine script injections and internet IP/Port calls made by DNTM when active. And yes, it was disturbing.

Even I did not catch on until an associate notified me to verify what s/he had discovered. In the same way, do not use AdBlock Plus, but rather AdBlock (separate developers) for similar concerns. I see nothing wrong with people trying to make a living for the long, long hours/days/etc. it takes to produce these free utilities. But there is a limit on how that profit is made. DNTM's developers have stepped beyond the limit of hypocrisy.

3.1.1064 is the current version of DoNotTrackMePlus. However, there are problems going on with Abine, the developer, such that:

1) One of their website SSL certificates is bad, listed as being from an invalid issuer. This is unforgivable from the likes of Abine, a security company. BROKEN!

2) The new version shows up in the Safari Extensions preferences list, but WILL NOT download to install. BROKEN!

3) If you attempt to download the Safari extension from the Abine website, which is the default behavior via MacUpdate, the website inexplicably can't detect what version of Safari you're using, instead thinking it is 'Safari 0.0', like that makes any sense. Therefore, it REFUSES to let you download the extension. BROKEN!

4) Therefore, you're forced to click on their small print link labeled "Think we got your browser version wrong? Click here to start the download (at your own risk)." < --SCARY.

I can verify that after you've managed to bypass the above mess and downloaded the thing, it DOES install and DOES work going back to at least Safari version 6.1.1.

I have not verified if this new version will install and work in anything previous to Safari 6.1.1.

∑ = Hey Abine! Get your act together please!!!

Looks like either their web person left or they outsourced the QA to India. I dumped this when I switched to Chrome.

I've been playing with this new version a few days now and have decided to disable it entirely. It's a PITA to use now. AND it qualifies as ADWARE because of the extra crap they threw into the interface that, when queried, dumps you into a marketing schpeel at the Abine website.

Ghostery: THE WINNER!

Deleted from Chrome and Safari. Not keen on Ghostery as I heard that it had been bought by an advertising company. Read good reviews on Disconnect so trying that.

Has issues with some sites. Try using CNET with it outside the USA and you'll see what I mean. While I really love this, it can be a real pain. It really is in need of some updates.

If you check out my post above, you'll find that Version 3 has NOT actually abandoned Safari. Instead, the developer Abine has gone all FUBAR in three fundamental ways. After you bypass all the mess Abine has created, you CAN manually download the extension and install it successfully into Safari v6.1.1 and above. I have not tested it on lower versions.

Clearly, Abine is a mess right now. Ghostery is far superior.

Uhm, what's the advantage of this over Ghostery? Seems that Ghostery has a larger database and stronger service off the top here, but I'd be interested in bolstering my privacy if this somehow complements or is superior.
