Import
- unlike most other programs I've tried (Quicken, SEE Finance, Moneydance …), you have to create accounts before importing
- from the get-go, without any training, it renames payees automatically according to some inscrutable algorithm, so you'll have to turn off the renaming on a per-transaction basis. This possibly involves going through thousands of payees
- you can't have credits in expense categories or debits in income categories (if you do, these transactions will be imported without category). More on this restriction below.
- you have to specify the starting balance for each account
Operation
- accounts take up too much space in sidebar; account balances can't be displayed on the same line as the names
- inactive accounts can't be hidden; it is advised that one relegate them to an "archive" folder, so they're never completely out of the way
- There is something rather primitive about even "expert" display mode. There's no way to display the type of transaction, even in "expert" mode (ie. transfer, deposit, credit, debit, etc).
- This app doesn't allow data entry to be completely inline. There's no way to display the type of transaction, even in "expert" mode. Double-clicking a transaction opens an "income/debit/transfer" dialog. Similarly, splits are assigned via dialog.
- Since transfers are in essence a single transaction, there's no way to go to a corresponding transaction in another account. MW doesn't follow the well-established convention where one indicates a transfer to another account by putting the account name in brackets in the "category" field (it can't, apparently because it doesn't allow categories for transfers).
- Similarly, if you download transactions to different account, MW can't match transactions in order to establish transfers
- because of the restriction on not having credits in expense categories, there is actually a "convert to refund" function that must be applied to the credit transaction, which requires that you manually locate the original transaction
Thus the process of making MoneyWiz, the developers made many baffling decisions that made this application impossible to adopt for me.
