At first I thought this was like a sort of TurnItIn. But this, being entirely offline has limited application unless you OCR reference material you're using as well as your documents to make sure you're in the clear.. or at least not being redundant?

That's a lot of work and I'm not sure I would entirely trust an internal database I created to check my work. Online checkers (colleges sometimes offer their use) are very good at catching things so your low # score can be trusted.

Presentation is at least strange: I may check whether my work is or is not original! This makes no sense, as I do know how it is, and that quotations are OK.
Such an app would be useful for those wishing to check whether other works are or are not original, e.g. professors checking authenticity of their students etc. etc.
Plagariasm has become usual in our era due to copy-paste. This is simple to detect in the case of my students, at a lower level, becomes more difficult at master or doctoral level, where things become more complicated.

"Make sure all your work is original. "
Wasn't this the purpose of this app to detect non-original work?
So this app will only compare with my own work, like if I was going to do a plagiarism on myself ?

Completely useless ! This would work if my text was compared to million of web pages, not against my own work

I agree that I share the same perplexity. At least, the developer clearly explains what the app can do.

The developer describes the only real use it can have: self-plagiarism. But very few people would need to avoid self-plagiarism: among the only ones who could really use it would be text-brokers, who write original articles for clients (for instance people creating minisites, for advertisements, etc.).

Beside such people, it is hard to think of other users. Except maybe people who use heavily material they have downloaded on their Mac, forget to insert references when they write a paper, and then need to check they have not plainly copied an existing text.

Or might the app be meant primarily for students writing a paper, copying heavily from other papers, and wanting to make sure they have made sufficient adjustments, so that the original text won't be recognizable by an anti-plagiarism tool? Then there might be a market after all! But definitely not an app I would buy for myself!

Jfm - You're absolutely right, its a niche product. Most of our users are freelance writers and copywrighters who check their own text against their previously written documents.

Novus Scan is a tool for teachers, editors, and writers, enabling them to find text that has been copied between documents.

Create a document database of articles, term papers, homework assignments, or research materials. Then, import documents that you'd like to scan, and Novus Scan will compare them to all the documents in its database and show you any matching text between the contents of its database and the document that you're scanning.

Novus Scan works completely offline, so you can be sure that your documents won't be uploaded to the Internet and you won't violate intellectual property agreements. You can build a database of documents, whether it's your own previously written work, reference materials used in research, or term papers from classes that you're teaching. Novus Scan is a great tool for freelance writers, preventing accidental self-plagiarism and finding text that accidentally has been used for another client's project. If you're a teacher, Novus Scan will help you compare term papers and other student assignments. If you're a student, put your reference and research documents into Novus Scan's database and then scan your document to ensure that you haven't accidentally copied any text from other sources.

Features:
  • Import documents in popular formats, including Word, PDF and html.
  • The scanning engine spots matching phrases at least 8 words long.
  • Print or save a report that shows the copied text with references to the source documents.
Notes:
  • Novus Scan only checks your document against documents that you add to its internal database.
  • The scanning algorithm has only been tested on English language text. Support for other languages is coming soon.
