Caffeinated

2.0.5
02 December 2013

Aesthetically-pleasing RSS reader.

Overview

Caffeinated is a fast, easy to use, stand alone RSS reader. Built upon version 1.3.3's base system it has been rewritten to be completely stand alone, fast and fun to use.

Please note, Caffeinated does work on 10.6 and is usable, but there are oddities compared to the latest 10.7 and later OS's. Along with its beautiful interface ( which looks stunning on a Retina Display ), Caffeinated also is feature rich, heres a few of what it has to offer:

  • Authenticated feeds support
  • Manual subscription management, you can import / export, subscribe, unsubscribe and manually reorder your subscriptions
  • Share articles to multiple services, these include:
  • Twitter ( or on 10.8 you can choose to use the Sharing Service )
  • Facebook
  • Buffer
  • Readability
  • Delicious
  • Google Plus
  • Instapaper
  • Pinboard
  • Read It Later
  • Safari Reading List
  • Evernote
  • Messages ( 10.8 only via Sharing Service )
  • Email ( via your email client )
Also great features such as:
  • Create custom shortcuts for various actions
  • View the original article within the application
  • View articles in various sorting orders and groups
  • Extremely customisable, custom themeable articles
  • Full Retina Display support
Caffeinated 2.0 has also been tweaked and change under the hood to provide incredible responsiveness whilst casually using the application or whilst storing thousands of articles.

Posted in the App Store Tuesday, March 27, 2012 12:59:13 PM Central Daylight Time First, I remind you that THESE ARE MY OPINIONS. ---- I began using Caffeinated (demo version from developer's web site) about two weeks ago and had a few problems, so I waited for improvements. They came. I bought it. I ran it. Oops, another problem with it not updating from Google. So, I wrote the developer and whadya know - he was not only on top of the problem, a new version, 1.1.2, will be out today (likely longer if you use the App Store cuz Apple ain't to quick). So my first comment is on developer attention to his users. And this stall problem hasn't been the only thing I written to him about. I always get an answer which is usually a solution. As for the app itself, I like the layout on my 17" MBP, but I sympathize with those of you who don't have a great deal of screen real estate. I suggest you let the developer know your preferences even if you are not buying yet. He may accommodate you in a future version. And remember, you can resize the columns. You might try narrowing the right column a lot and also using your browser which you probably have open anyway. Whatever your contentions are, let the developer know. He has given us a great reader with a lot of useful options, but we're still in version 1. Give him a reason to continue with improvements. It also helps to BUY A LICENSE as incentive. PROS: Uses the Mac's full screen function for its one window; incorporated web page viewing area can save a little on resources if the page isn't overloaded with advertising, otherwise it's an easy matter pop into your default browser especially if you're an AdBlocker user; all shortcuts are redefinable by YOU - and that's juts a few. CONS: Can't resize font in the subscriptions column - not a big deal, just a nicety; would like to see font control for all panels in one place. I like the way it works for the article area with a Control-click - but the font sizing of the center section is found in Preferences; would like to see a manual sort option for the subscriptions. OK, enough already. I liked it enough to pay and I have no regrets. BTW, the demo verion on the developer's web site is a full-function 15-day trial. Disclaimer: I have absolutely no connection to the developer - this is not a phony or coerced review.

I'm currently looking for a good RSS reader after losing Reeder. I have tried Cream and Caffeinated and was almost ready to buy but when I went to the App store it says Caffeinated is "Not Available at this time" ? Makes me a little concerned about the app especially since the developers site consists of a download link for the demo and a link for the App Store where you get the above message. Anyone know what's up? Like the program after taking the time to review. Any thoughts on Cream vs Caffeinated?

The app version reads 1.2.2 when viewing the file info (⌘ + I). I'm assuming the developer forgot to update it at some point?

This app is very attractive, and very fast. I'm trying to decide whether I really need tabs or not; if not, this will become by newsreader.

Tried contacting the developers three times with simple (pre-sales) questions - but got no reply. Wondering if the product is still supported… If it is, it's certainly not well supported, sad to say.

Msealey, I believe the developer has problems. After I wrote that long review, I had many contacts with him. Some were fruitful, but eventual, he stopped writing back. Caffeinated has a few problems that the developer refuses to acknowledge, yet he keeps turning out updates. I don't know what to tell you, except that now I withdraw my recommendation. It isn't worth the cost.

End_user_guy, Thanks! I have now heard from Caffeinated's developer; very helpful - it seems my emails etc had been filtered as spam. Apparently there are probs with the latest version (1.3) on 10.6; but it's still being developed and apparently works on M/Lion. I'm also considering Reeder. But they have so far not even auto-acknowledged my inquiries. I hate to draw too many conclusions from such behaviour; but it's hard to feel enthusiastic, isn't it.
