Starry Night is a port of a Windows from-scratch (thanks to Evan Green) recreation of a Berkeley Systems After Dark classic module. If you enable "Retro Colors" (e.g. grayscale) and squint a bit, you can pretend your Mac has traveled back in time and become a Mac Classic.

Uses Cocoa drawing calls that should work on any Mac running Mac OS 10.5 or later

Note that in preview mode, the screensaver doesn't currently take into account the smaller view and draws the same number of buildings that would be drawn in the full screen mode, so this may not be an accurate

Last download works fine for 10.8, thanks for fixing it.

After the screensaver has been on for about 5 minutes, all the lights in every building are on. Is there a way to make it so that the buildings gradually cycle their lights on and off?

Let me look into this more -- it's supposed to cycle through turning lights on and off once it hits a certain point, but maybe that needs some tweaking.

Apologies to all -- I'm trying to update the screensaver for Mountain Lion (I don't have a dev machine available for this purpose yet). Hopefully will get this done soon!

Thank you so much! An update for Mountain Lion would be awesome. Had to buy a new mac and it bluntly informed me that the coolest screensaver of all time wouldn't work! Heartbreaking :(

Ok, I believe I've got a version uploaded that's been confirmed (by one person so far) to work on Mountain Lion. Please download again (the date on the .saver file should be today's date) and try it out. Thanks and again apologies!

Hello,
I downloaded this screensaver for my Mac...10.6.8 OSX and the first time it worked okay. Then I did some adjustments in the Option section of the Preview part of the System Pre. window of the screensavers and from then on it crashes the System Preferences. So I downloaded more and the same. I trashed the old ones but get the same results...crash.

Sorry to hear about the crash, Willchik. I'm not certain what's going wrong. One thing you could try is to delete the preferences file for the screensaver by going to your Library/Preferences/ByHost directory and looking for a com.mindconsoleproductions.screensaver.StarryNight.NNNN file (where the "NNNN" is some series of letters and numbers). You can delete this file (or move it to a different folder) and see if that brings it back to the default options. Do not delete anything else in that directory, however.

Huh, that's curious. I actually developed it on a two-monitor setup, and it was working properly for me. What sort of configuration do you have? Perhaps I missed something...

What ever happened to AfterDark anyway? I loved their screensavers, especially the one that featured a photo-realistic finger inside your Mac writing text of your choosing onto the steamed-up screen.
Very accomplished graphics for the day.
Last saw that running on my old Umax Mac clone.
I'd pay folding money to have it back.

Apologies for the late reply -- I've uploaded a new version that a few people have confirmed works on Mountain Lion, so please download the updated version (remove the older one first) and let me know if you have any problems.

Hi Hmoniz -- I've had a few people confirm that it should be working on Mountain Lion now (but admittedly I don't have a ML system to verify myself). Can you tell me a bit more about what doesn't work? Have you made sure to delete any older versions first? Also, if you can, try deleting the screensaver preferences to have the saver start with the default settings (go to your Library/Preferences/ByHost directory and looking for a com.mindconsoleproductions.screensaver.StarryNight.NNNN file where the "NNNN" is some series of letters and numbers and delete or move just this file -- do not delete anything else in that directory.

Hello! Your idea is correct. I deleted 2 files with the same name and reinstalled and it is working :) :) Thank you a lot! Best regards
