Chat client.

Overview

ICQ ("I seek you"), is a once-popular program that notifies you in real-time when friends or colleagues are online. Once they are online, you can send them messages, chat, play games, exchange files, and more.

The "New ICQ" includes:

  • Facebook Chat - Add your Facebook friends to your contact list and chat with them directly from ICQ
  • Messaging History - View your messaging history with friends directly from the contact list or the message window
  • Status Update - Update your ICQ status and post it to Facebook and twitter with a click of a button
  • Share Videos - Send your friends YouTube videos while chatting with them and easily view them in the message window

What's new in ICQ

Version 3.0.27953:
  • Use an almost perfect multiselect (some improvements remained);
  • Try a new group of "Unimportant" to the list of recent chats;
  • Check the highlight in chat's search results;
  • Place the mouse over the video in the chat to hear the sound;
  • Create a group and channel in the menu in the list of recent chats;
  • Use an indicator of pending members into the chat;
Also:
  • Returned the jumping icon in Dock;
  • Fixed a lot of bugs.

ICQ is an Israeli developed software, changed few hands over time and now owned by a Russian Company. Contrary to well known spyware giants like Google, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and many other american spy-cartels, not a single Hi-Tech software company in Russia has ever spied on anybody. The accusations posted here are false, fake. Even if some of Russian HiTech companies were involved in data mining, it was done internally in Russia, and on very specific companies, which has been very normal in the last 100 years spying on your competitors, all around the world.

I personally would NOT use ICQ for professional purposes. There is plenty of evidence that Russian authorities have been able to collect data from it for prosecutorial purposes. Also, its website programming is a mess, which doesn't bode well for the app. On some Mac hardware it has a reputation for crashing. Obviously, justified paranoia will continue on into the future. - - HOWEVER: • It's entirely Open Source. • 'ICQ New', referring to the current version, offers what it calls 'End-to-End Encryption. • It's currently attempting to compete with Zoom for video conferencing. • It still Apple approved. • This version does not contain any known malware, I personally checked. • It continues to be popular on both Mac and iOS in much of the world. - - CONCLUSION: Do NOT do any critical work using ICQ. Despite its claims, don't expect it to be entirely private. ⭐ But for casual use, it continues to be fine and innocuous.

I can only share that this 'application' stopped to have a meaning like almost all the chats by the time the profiles are practically banned and there is no more any search engine to find who could match, in location, interest, school, age or whatever that can describe person BUT listen here the PARANOIDS who are SO MUCH PARANOID to 'feel safe' using u.s.a. 'applications' goes ahead the ridicolous and falls in the pathology!

Isn’t surprising to see applications (once ‘programs) fall behind the startng point at their birth, like Skype (now a not funny joke, compared at what was version 2.8)and this one, or fallen in the oblivion of a fulgid past, like Yahoo, the total disaster and failure caused by a heap of bigots who were fighting any kind of acquaintance between users (like NOW icq (I will write it again caoitalized when it will DESERVE it!) and Skype, leaving to Facebook the monopole of the socials? Now the name itself lost totally its original meaning because, even if You Seek Him,… you will never FIND him, now that any search between users is impossible! By the way, even here nobody cares about this 'fake-ICQ', such a shame for who is already disgusted by Skype's lost of any dignity!

ICQ on the Mac was never top-notch. Way back when, it was a questionable, buggy, hobbled Carbon application under OS9 and X. You couldn't do much with it: file transfers worked maybe twice, ever, and doing anything but the most simple of things was nigh unto impossible. Then it went away for a bit. The developers actually said that they had no intention of making an updated Mac client. But it came back -- under new ownership, I'm given to believing -- and came out with... this. This is not like the old, crusty Carbon ICQ. This is less an application and more like something you'd put ointment on. It's wonky, it works sometimes, there's just something about it that smells a little... off. If talking to the three or four people that still use ICQ is really, really, really important to you, then by all means, have at it. But if you're not... there're are way better ways of communicating. Like the postal service. Or smoke signals.

If you use version 1.3.2 download from ICQ, check for update will prompt you to update to 1.3.4 After update, ICQ 1.3.4 no longer work. It crash on startup (my Mac is a RMBP 15 inches mid 2012 running OSX 10.9.5 seed 13F7) and Safari 7.1 seed 2. I have to revert back to 1.3.2 from MAS that work fine I have filed a bug report to ICQ, No response so far. This is why ICQ is getting less and less popular this day

This oooold version still runs on 10.6.7 and rarely crashed over the past 8 years.. There is a new official Mac-version based on Adobe AIR, but it doesn't import my old databases (history), so I keep up using this old one for now. The old version has_no_ gimmicks at all, it is a straight text-based messenger and that's what I want. No web 2.0 fuzz, no multi-feature bastard. That's why I was never jealous about the "feature-rich" Windows version..

Why isn't ICQ for Mac updated? It is almost 2 years old now and the Windows version is far ahead, has games and you can do video conferences, it has far more features. I can't receive files from some Winusers with ICQ 3.4, it has an rather ugly interface and you can't press 'Return' instead of clicking onto 'Send'... fix all these issues and I'll be happy with ICQ for Mac... so far it's rather useless for me...

ICQ is a truly unique messaging client, but it needs some major features that other clients (Adium/Fire) have implemented. I adore Adiums tabbed chat window and spell checking. And Fires encryption abilities. If ICQ added these features I would easily make it my one and only client. ICQ also needs another interface change, i don't find it's currebt design useful at all. Noted ICQ features: Live messageing/chat, and messages that wait for you to recieve like email.

This is the 3.4 Beta Build 16... that's what the installer says at least. This version offers interoperation with AIM. Interestingly, I couldn't figure out how to use this with the new AIM beta, ICQ is very easy to use. There are cases when Fire doesn't recognize a authorization request or doesn't handle it well... it's always handy to have an "orignial" client at hand.

I think Mirabillis is confused itself in determining what the 'b' stands for. The ICQ website clearly says "build version" but on downloading ICQ 3.4b16.sit the filename becomes "ICQ 3.4 Beta Installer" "Build" or "Beta" - its no wonder the user is getting confused. It is still a good application, its free, if only it would stay up to date with the pc version and not lag so far behind.

The only thing that saves this piece of software is the fact that it's the offical ICQ client and can do a few more things then the IM clones like Fire and Proteus. However for something that's been out for atleast 4 years it hasn't really improved at all and still sports the same un-mac like and confusing interface it always has. If anything it got worse under mac os x and is still slow and buggy. It's worth having on your hard drive only if you find yourself having to File Transfer to other ICQ users.

ICQ should urgently re-think their naming strategy... NOW they tell us the "b21" stands for "build 21", not beta. If you read the posts below, almost everyone (including me) thought the "b" is for "beta" and the "a" means alpha. This is very confusing. I guess some people probably went looking for something else, thinking that ICQ is still offering unfinished software. Why don't they make it easy and give it a simple version number like 3.2.21?

I used Gerry's ICQ, but because it's not being updated I moved to ICQ 2.7 and 2.8. I didn't like them... but with the new version, 3.0X, it's a different story. I don't have any problem / it's very stable (no crashes, no bombs) and it's working really nice. The only thing I think they can improve is the interface (well, at least they are trying)... I use an iMac with Mac OS 9.2.2 and 384MB RAM. I recommend using this app!!!! :P

I'm frustrated with all of the Mac OS X "IM" type clients...Fire still drops my messages and my friends are frustrated that I'm online but ignoring them and I do not receive their messages. THERE IS A POLL for which platform to port Trillian (a "fire" type multi-IM client) and Mac OS is losing to Linux...according to my Windows/Linux friends, this is a very stable client and we should all vote for the Mac OS X port...vote at: http://www.trillian.cc/ thanks, Alan

I like this version a lot better than 2.0. Well done! Its a pity that the Windows version has sooo many more features, but I do like the small tweaks that have been done in this version. No complaints whotsoever

ICQ is still the best IM service you can get, at least in my opinion.

The Mac/PC translation is not working with Swedish characters ÅÄÖ. Simple, but anoying, workaround is to click on PC icon once to get it "crossed out" and then again to get in uncrossed, then send message.

It won't connect on my machine, the interface looks bloated and even more clunky than previous versions, and it's still lacking many features that mac users would like to see. What a great piece of software this is...

Bad, bad messaging service. It might have started the phenomenon, but ICQ is now irrelevant. AIM is better and has more features, and will connect you to more people than ICQ. Go over to your Windoze buddy and take a look at his ICQ. Now go to your Mac and look at all the features (several DOZEN) you're missing out on. Miribilis needs to be shutdown. THIS DOES NOT LINK TO VERSION 2.2a OF ICQ - MIRIBILIS IS NOW IGNORING THE MAC AND ONLY MAKES THE OLDER 2.0b AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD. Version 2.2 was limited to the number of users who could use it anyway, and so severely limited that you would never be able to use it at all. Forget it - go email webmaster@icq.com and tell them why you're not going to use it.
