Cookie Stumbler (5 Macs)2.6.6

07 January 2015

Scan for ad and tracking cookies.

Overview

Cookie Stumbler 2 is here. Rewritten from scratch and featuring a re-engineered heuristics engine that detects up to 6 times as many tracking cookies as its predecessor and that processes cookies up to 40 times faster, Cookie Stumbler 2 still includes all the features that you love, but takes them all a step further to make the best even better.

Features
  • Time Saving - Cookie Stumbler 2 quickly analyses your Mac's cookies and lets you know how many tracking cookies it has found - a task that would have taken a lot of time when going through a large amount of cookies by yourself. Thanks to Cookie Stumbler's unmatched heuristics engine, you'll get a reliable, up-to-date tracking report within just a few moments, regardless of the number of cookies stored on your Mac.
  • Private Browsing - The all-new Private Browsing mode removes tracking cookies as you browse the web, while allowing useful cookies to be stored on your Mac. This feature requires no special plugins, no special extensions and works with all web browsers that Cookie Stumbler supports.
  • Smart Cleaning - Cookie Stumbler 2 introduces "Smart Cleaning". Rather than going through the tedious process of telling Cookie Stumbler your domain preferences one by one, Smart Cleaning allows you to achieve the same effect using a single rule. You choose the criteria and what to do with cookies that match it - Cookie Stumbler will handle the rest.
  • Centralized control over your cookies - Rather than having to manage each Web browsers' cookies separately, Cookie Stumbler 2 consolidates them into one convenient location. And thanks to Cookie Stumbler 2's brand new categorization and search tools, this kind of a task has become simpler than ever.
  • Compatible with major Web browsers - Cookie Stumbler 2 supports all major Web browsers out of the box, which include Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Chromium, Opera, iCab, Camino, Roccat, Adobe Flash Player, and Microsoft Silverlight. Support for additional Web browsers can be achieved using web browser plugins.
  • Maintains your Mac - Cookie Stumbler 2 features various maintenance programs, which ensure that your Web browsers use less hard drive space, are faster, more reliable and safer to use. You can run these programs anytime by yourself or as part of a regular cookie cleaning operation.
  • Keep track on tracking cookies - Advertising companies use cookies to track you. Time to return the favor. Cookie Stumbler 2 features an intuitive statistics system which will provide you with a clear overview of your recent cookie activity. And, using Cookie Stumbler 2's new mapping system, you can even track cookies back.

"What's New" for v1.4 ends with: "MACUPDATE Happy with Cookie Stumbler? Please take a moment and leave us a rating on Mac Update, it really means a lot to us." I was under the impression that changelogs were for, well, listing out new features. "Please go leave us positive feedback" is not a "feature" of this product and should not be listed as such...

I've been a paid user for about 4 years now and have found CS to be a very handy utility. I've had issues updating CS in the past, but my emails were always answered promptly - even on weekends. The program has been woking flawless for me for the last two years or so. I'm a happy user and use this program regularly. It does what is supposed to do. I highly recommend it to keep track of cookies.

I have used Cookie Stumbler on all my MacBook Pros and iMacs, each and every day for many years, and never had a problem. I am puzzled by other peoples poor reviews.

It brought my Mac Mini Server to a halt and I couldn't run the software. OS X 10.9.1. I had to force shut down my computer. I gave it the benefit of the doubt, tried it again, and the software seemed to make more progress at launch, this time scanning for cookies, until eventually it froze my system again. This time I had Activity Monitor open in case I had to Force Quit the application but it was of no use since the whole system froze again. I gave it at least 20-30 minutes each time the system froze before checking again and finally performing the force shutdown. Upon restart, my Mac was slow and unresponsive as Cookie Stumbler, Activity Monitor and Firefox were starting up, since they were running when the computer froze. I wanted to try an alternative to Macscan since it hasn't been updated in over a year. As they say, "if it ain't broke don't fix it." Macscan still performs superbly and the spyware definitions and cookie blacklists are updated regularly. The last ones are from January 2 2014. Using CleanApp I removed 28 files related to Cookie Stumbler, including the application itself.

Caused nothing but problems when installed. It literally broke the most important extension I use 1Password. Multiple instances appeared in the dock, required force quitting, non-existant support. It had to be uninstalled and was a complete waste of money, with no possibility of recovery. I also found out that the version I bought through MacUpdate wasn't the same version as sold through the App Store, and that the MacUpdate version is a watered down version - not that it would matter since it breaks things and had to be removed. Stay AWAY.

Cookie Stumbler phones home when you run it, sadly the WriteIt people have had a dysfunctional server for about a month now. THey keep posting nonsense to Twitter about how they are almost fixed, but it still isn't fixed. I have to wonder about teh competence of any tech organization that can't even manage to keep a server running DO yourself a favor and do not buy this until they have either 1) fixed their server problems or 2) gone out of business, which is going to happen if they can achieve #1.

Licensing is cumbersome. You have to download a licensing file instead of just entering a code. The process is very buggy. The licensing file works on one Mac but not on the other, I get an error saying I should re-download the file. I already did, still doesn't work and no reply from support. Worst is that the application often crashes and always automatically scans as soon as you start it. There is a Cancel button but it only crashes the app instead of canceling the scanning so you can change settings.

The prompt support for this app is outstanding. I had trouble getting this to run without having to "force quit" several times. Seems to be okay now however.

Also, does this product have an icon in the dock and need to constantly be running? Or does it live behind the scenes? Also, the single license version of this software can be had at the App Store for $6.99

Why does the screnshot show a photo of the product in a foreign language? I'm not against foreign speaking people, but I prefer software designed by people who speak my own language. Otherwise there is often poorly worded documentation that is awkward.

Just decided to try this out, in case it would be interesting to purchase. It doesn't manage to get through the cookie detection. After it reads all cookies it starts the "locate & analyze domains" bit of the process. Pretty much at exactly half of the process (according to the progressbar) it just hangs and that's how it stays. I've restarted it but the same result.

I would suggest using two simple Firefox add-ons instead. Better Privacy and Ghostery seem to cover the core feature of Cookie Stumbler, and both of those add-ons are free.

What's the benefit of using this, when you can use Firefox add-ons like Better Privacy and Ghostery for free?
