Houdini overview

Houdini is a free Mac menu bar utility that hides inactive applications. Stay focused and clutter-free with Houdini. Houdini remembers your settings and even lets you configure timeouts on a per-application basis.

What’s new in version 1.3

Version 1.2:

Improvements:

  • When clicking an application's icon or dragging it's time slider to zero, Houdini will no longer attempt to hide that application. Its icon will appear greyed out, and the time delay will read 'Never'.
  • All graphics are now retina ready!
  • Added a proper hover effect for the 'view' icon.
  • Made some tweaks to hopefully sort out an issue where Houdini would not resume on restart.

Houdini has been given a Yosemite-friendly update and is now going by the name Hocus Focus (http://hocusfoc.us)

Good except that Adobe Illustrator doesn't support CMD-H for hiding, so Houdini doesn't work with it. It must be possible to add an exception for Illustrator - presumably there is an Applescript command that could be used instead? Also the degree of control that one has over Housini is rather limited - the longest time before hiding is only 5mins, and it isn't possible apparently to disable hiding for any chosen application. Maybe when dragging the slider for the length of delay it could go to "Never" at the end?

A brilliant little app, a modern take on the ancient spirited away. The developer should make it an paid app, I would pay for it and so would many other nerds.

Really Useful App! This is already improving my concentration and workflow. Single Application mode doesn't work well for me because I switch between apps a lot and often i have to cut and paste between them or drag and drop between them. In Single Application mode, the other app disappears immediately. This allows the other app to hang around for the number of seconds you select, which gives the opportunity to drag and drop or cut and paste more quickly, with less mousing or keystrokes. Great job! The only suggestion I'd make is to give users the choice of something like 5 seconds instead of 15 seconds being the lowest that can be chosen. Very, very useful and well-done app. I'd pay for this on the MAS.
