Share Mac printers with iOS devices.

Overview

Run Printopia on your Mac to share its printers to any capable iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. Printopia will also add virtual printers, allowing you to save print-outs to your Mac and send to apps.

  • Wireless Printing To Your Mac's Printers - Whether you have an inkjet printer plugged into your Mac, a laser printer plugged into your router or even a network printer, if your Mac can print to it, Printopia will share it. Printopia even supports many password-protected printers.
  • Easy, Instant Set-up - Double-click to install Printopia, and within seconds see most any connected printers on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. You'll also see Printopia's "Send To Mac" and "Send To Dropbox on Mac" virtual printers. That's it!
  • Serious Security For Privacy and Peace of Mind - With the addition of password protection for your printers, Printopia is a great solution for a shared environment such as an office of classroom. Industry standard encryption protects your print jobs between your iOS device and your Mac.
  • Save Paper With A Printopia Virtual Printer - Printopia adds a "Send To Mac" printer to your network. This virtual printing option will save a PDF or JPG file directly to your Mac. No need to waste paper next time you need to print a confirmation page.
  • Print To Your Mac's Dropbox Folder - Dropbox.com users can print PDF and JPG files directly to the Mac's Dropbox folder. Dropbox will take care of syncing your printouts for access anywhere you go.

HI - I have just started to trial the Printopia and it identifies my printer. However, I still can't print from my iPhone 6Splus or iPad.
I note that the
* the app symbol is next to the printer
* the iPhone recognises the printer
* the printer note says offline
* message from phone is that the printer is busy.'
My question:
Is this an app or printer issue or MAC issue - I have Mac OS Mojave 10.14.3?
Hope you can help
PS - the printer is Epson ET-2710

Had this for years with non-airprint enabled printers and its worked well. It now works even better as it has become more refined. I also like the being able to 'print' to device, where i don't want to print actual paper, but want to store on a network drive, or my mac, for example. Well worth the money!

3.09 is latest.

Also: this is an under-rated app. It's five star must-try IMO. See my review further down.

Printopia is GREAT. I have used it since I first discovered it. It allows all my pre-AirPrint printers (inkjet and laser) to be shared wirelessly over the home network. This makes all the printers available to all our iOS an laptop devices. Very cool, and VERY reliable. Love it.

Works like magic. Creates delight. No detailed instructions due to elegant simplicity. Awesome software. Print stuff from the living room or from across the world, it's right there in my tray when I need it (if you're on the road and need immediate hard copy, fax stuff to your hotel's fax machine!)

Works as advertised. In my experience, version 3 works better than version 2 did. The upgrade to version 3 could have been explained better, but once installed (and version 2 removed automatically) it works well.

Okay, here's my experience of upgrading: • Bought this app as part of an MU bundle. Had to recover my old key from the previous developer. • Then upgraded via the site. • Why the developer needs my telephone number is beyond me. • New key not sent. I used key recovery to get it. Then the key arrived. After that my official email regarding my key arrived! • Printopia is now an app rather than a preference pane. Not a good decision IMO. • Printing images used to automatically open them 'like magic' in preview. It no longer seems to work. This feature has to be enabled by clicking on the printer, then its settings. • Closing the window should close the app, given it is not required to run to Printopia to function. • Overall, It would be better just to run the old Printopia until it no longer functions. I bought this so at least it would be supported beyond High Sierra. As mentioned, some documentation would be nice. • The PDF and App workflows are really good - but should be more obvious to the end user.

• I keep a spreadsheet with all my licence keys...
• Requires a number, you don't have to provide a your phone number. But I agree with you.
• I also liked the pref pane. Best place to manage services.
• Don't understand your 'like magic' point.
• Contact the developer about whether closing window should close app (a matter of opinion what it should do).
• I am going to persevere with the new Printopia because the developer was very responsive to problems I had - now mostly fixed in 3.0.2.
• Documentation: I am sure you found https://www.decisivetactics.com/support/?topic=printopia

The developer is responsive.

Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate the constructive criticism.

The phone number is optional, but helps when we have to resolve an issue with your order. Unfortunately we deal with mistyped e-mail addresses regularly and often times the only way to resolve these is by phone.

Regarding the e-mail, there is a delay sometimes as receiving e-mail service providers sometimes categorize our messages as SPAM, rejecting our initial attempts to deliver messages. This only happens with one or two receiving e-mail services providers - AOL most often.

There are important technical reasons to move away from System Preferences and it's unclear how long Apple will support third party preference panels. Switching to an app removes several very difficult obstacles that sapped development resources and constrained what we could do with the software.

We'll look into adding a preference option where closing the window quits the app, and could make the auto-open feature the default for certain types of virtual printers.

Just installed it after spending 30min trying to figure out how to do it. It has no obvious install instructions. All that downloads is an App. SQA on this product seems very poor. It demands that I use it in an Admin account which I am already logged into. There is no info or help when first launched. It also demands it be in the "Applications"folder and does not like being in a subfolder. A successful installation is not obvious. The only way I found to determine this is the presence of the drive in the printer prefs preference pane. It did not remove the previous version as the description indicated it would.. And finally; I could only get it installed by login into my machine as the "root user", which in current systems is a bit complex to set up; Apple generally advises against:; and has the potential to damage OSX if used improperly thus usually requiring a complete reinstallation of the operating system should this happen. Given this experience I would wait to upgrade until or if an update to 3.0 is released with fixes that allows users to install from an actual administrative account and offers some documentation, such as a readme with the App.

I am so sorry for the trouble you experienced. Please contact our support team so we can get some additional information from you to help resolve the problem? I can assure you this is not the normal experience - something has gone terribly wrong here. So far we've only had one report of an issue like this out of a few thousand installs, so we'd appreciate your patience and assistance while we work through the issue with you. Also, just to clarify, you are free to move Printopia anywhere you'd like on your machine - we only suggest you move it to your Applications folder at launch since that's where most users are used to looking for it.

Additional issue: Printopia Server does not allow machine to sleep. Verified by force quitting Printopia Server from Activity Monitor after running the following command line that shows what processes are keeping the Mac awake.:
pmset -g assertions

Sleep question - another point of view:

Printopia is a server product designed to be available to other devices (iPhones, etc.) on your network. So it needs to remain awake to do that.

You could suggest to the developer that allowing sleep should be an option, but I am sure that the design decision is correct and blocking sleep should be the default.

Just to update this thread, we've found and fixed an issue where some Mac models could be kept awake by Printopia under certain circumstances. We're working through an issue with sleep proxy detection. This will be a configurable preference in later versions. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

To address Jim's other concern, Printopia can now be installed and configured by non-admin users. As this can be an important security feature we'll be adding the ability to restrict access to the Printopia administrative functions to certain users or groups in a future release, but we will default to allowing anyone to access to simplify the initial install experience.

The develop has addressed to most of the Class 1 issues in the latest release. There is now a 'switch' that will 'turn off' the part of the app that prevents computers from going to sleep, with the default being 'own'. This is quite valuable for desktop machines were the machines are always powered on but printing from mobile devices are only occasionally used. The App install now seems to properly recognize Admin users. It still wants to move the App to the Applications folder but you an choose to ignore the request. I find this very useful as I try to reserve the Applications folder for Apple default items as much as possible, making subfolders in the Applications folder to group 3rd party apps by categories such as 'Net' or 'Media'.

Given the response I received from my previous comments and rating, the developers response comes as a pleasant surprise as many others seem not to care about such comments.

While I can't actually change it it raises my 'Star' rating from a 1 to a 4.

Not needed anymore with newer versions of iOS and Mac's. I installed it three years ago and never used it.
