Stay

1.2.8
02 May 2019

Window-organization tool.

Overview

Stay is for those who are fastidious about keeping their windows tidy. Stay ensures that your windows are always where you want them to be, even as you connect and disconnect displays. Move your windows to where you want them, then have Stay store them. Once stored, windows can be returned to their stored state at any time by having Stay restore them.

What's new in Stay

Version 1.2.8:
General Changes:
  • Improved compatibility with macOS 10.14 Mojave.
  • Support for dark mode on macOS 10.14 Mojave.
  • Stay can now resize and reposition the windows of Adobe CC apps.
  • Improved reliability when restoring windows for apps
  • with a single window.
Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed a bug that could cause the wrong display to be shown as the "main" display in the stored windows editor.
  • Fixed a bug causing Stay to crash if the active application had an empty name.
  • Fixed memory leaks.

Having different numbers of displays connected to my MacBook Pro throughout the day, Stay makes keeping the many open windows manageable. For someone that likes their windows to be where they want them to be, Stay will help you keep your sanity. :-) Thanks for the 1.1 update and making Stay work with Spaces! Even better now.

I was after an app that would restore specific windows and their paticular positions in the Finder (macOS 10.12.6) after a restart. Found Stay, tried the demo for 30 seconds and paid for a reg code immediately. Exactly what I was after.

Seems to have stopped working under MacOS 10.13, it now never automatically restores windows to its saved positions. Buyers be aware!

@ Lounge-Deluxe : no problems here, even running Mojave (macOS 10.14). Saves and restores my Finder windows without a hitch.

Maybe try re-installing, or contacting the dev.

Good to know, thanks. I did a clean install of MacOS 10.14 and then installed Stay again and saved all the desired window positions for my apps. It now randomly works so I will contact the dev about this.

Can't live without this one. Fixes nearly all of the problems when living with multiple displays on macOS. I have it starting up with Starupizer2 right at the start so when I restart my Mac, voila, I'm back to where I need to be!

I love Stay! Running from meeting to my desk and to another meeting has me plugging in my external display and bam, all my windows go back to the way they are supposed to be thanks to Stay! I've only got 1 beef: I have 2 windows open for Chrome, one on each monitor. It would be great if when I connected the external monitor to my mbp, Stay would remember which window was on the external. As it happens now, I have to move the 1 chrome window I like to keep on the external back, but honestly, moving 1 window back into position is nothing compared to what I had to do before I had Stay. Great APP!

The current version of Stay (1.2.5) will remember which Chrome window belongs to each monitor. You need to go to "Edit Stored Windows..." and then set a "Title Match Pattern" for each chrome window.

Appears to do everything I could want, except the things that drive me to want to purchase it... i.e. 1.) no ability to move space on application launch (to fix those apps, like Parallels, that no longer respect the 'This Desktop' setting) and 2.) no working with X11 windows or Steam what so ever.

thats a restriction by Apple and how they changed the OS X System in recent years. And some Developers are to blame not using System standards for their App windows (Adobe and Steam come to mind).

(Sorry if I took the wrong words. Im just a longtime Mac Power-User - not a #macOS Dev.)

Stay and Moom besides are my choices to organize all my Finder and specific Application windows. Stay I think is the only Utility that stores and restores the individual defined position of different Application windows (for example the Main window and Equalizer window in iTunes) in just one step via Menu or Hotkey. I love it, because my wife and my son very often disarrange different Application windows. A killer feature is Stays option to restore windows as Applications are launched. Thanks to the Developer for this jewel.

I bought it . It is great . I have a program THNKORSWIM with multiple windows set up . It does not always repopulate on the monitors in the same configuration that it is shut down in . Could not solve the problem ... well STAY did ... works great . Thanks .

After some experimenting on both and tweeking on the THINKORSWIM program . I have gotten it to work . STAY does what it says it will . The developer contacted me a couple of times trying to help me with the problem so he is attentive . It save me a lot of time and aggravation . Good purchase .

I bought this software more than two months go and can't find a suitable adjective to describe its usefulness. I often keep many windows open on my Mac and move them around continuosly. Before knowing "Stay" I had to spend a lot of time reorganizing all these windows and restore them to their original position. Now I have a Genie at my disposal that does this tiring function with one click. How quick and painless a once tedious job has become thanks to this tiny yet great utility! If you don't like mousing around like me then look no further. Fariborz Amirshahi - Verona (Italy)

I'd like to try this program but unfortunately it doesn't function for me. The first time I launched it all its menus were disabled. When I tried to relaunch it for the second time it showed a dialog box that its trial period was over! Something must be wrong here. Has anyone else got the same issue? Sorry about the problem with Stay. I'm currently testing a new version that fixes the bug; it'll be available as soon as testing's finished, I'm expecting within the next day. To get the new version working properly you'll need to delete ~/Library/Application Support/Stay and ~/Library/Preferences/com.cordlessdog.Stay.plist If you have any further problems, please feel free to contact me at support@cordlessdog.com Sincere apologies for the inconvenience, Matt
