Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

1.1.1.1806
16 April 2014

Real-time science fiction strategy game.

Overview

Download the patch by launching the Starcraft II game and downloading it through the Battle.net connection within the app.

Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty is a strategy game played in real-time. You see the action from a top-down perspective and command your armies to gain control of the battlefield and ultimately defeat your opponents. The game's single-player campaign focuses on the terrans, but you can play multiplayer matches as any of the three StarCraft II races: the terrans, the protoss, or the zerg.

Each race has access to unique units; these units fill specific roles on the battlefield. Combining different units to form versatile armies is one path to victory.

The most basic units at your command are your workers. They harvest the resources you need to expand your base and to add more units to your growing army, and your workers also create new buildings. More advanced units become available once your base meets certain requirements, such as having constructed certain buildings or researched certain technologies.

In multiplayer matches, you win the game when you've wiped all your enemy's buildings off the map or if the other players surrender to you.

In typical real-time strategy games, players build armies and vie for control of the battlefield. The armies in play can be as small as a single squad of marines or as large as a full-blown planetary invasion force. As commander, you observe the battlefield from a top-down perspective and issue orders to your units in real time. Strategic thinking is key to success; you need to gather information about your opponents, anticipate their moves, outflank their attacks, and formulate a winning strategy.

What's new in Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

Version 1.1.1.1806:
  • The Heart of the Swarm Prolog always displays in English regardless of language selection.
  • Adding a player to a lobby that is using a SwarmMulti or LibertyMulti extension mod will cause a "Dependencies could not be validated" error.
  • Custom Games created with Private Extension Mods still have an option to be opened to the public.
  • The Groups pane can display incorrect information
  • Icons and decals do not update if they were changed while the club window was closed.

Sorry to say that it works better in Windows. In Snow Leopard the game only ran smoothly when I had the settings on medium. In Windows I am able to play the game at a good, constant frame-rate with all the settings on high. I have a MacBook Pro, 2.4 C2D, 8600M GT/w 256mb, 4GB ram, 7200 rpm HDD. It is quiet a shame they are charging $60 for an "unfinished game" because you only get to play as one of the factions for the campaign. Other than that, its awsome!

This week only (Nov 20-26, 2012), Starcraft II Wings is on sale for $19.99. Or get Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm together for $59.99. (P.S. - not a Blizzard rep...I'm just an interested user getting my copy of Starcraft II now!)

Properly one blizzards most successful games of 2010. A truly high speed RTS game with a twist that makes you want to play even more. It dam straight sucked me right in and I was in a cave for a week :3. If you like SI-FI adventure or just Pwning the shit out of Aliens on a bird-eye view battlefield. I would certainly recommend this game :D

@Star-Affinity. Good question. I asked one of the guys on the OpenGL Architectural Review Board. He even mentions this in the 2006 Blender Conference presentation about OpenGL optimizations (at around 43:10): http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=847205086747563852# Bu yeah, I'm not a graphics developer. Would be a good explanation why the same game runs so much slower on the same hardware on the Mac than on Windows (we did quite a bit of testing and this is typically the case, with both Windows and OS X using OpenGL drivers). Indeed, it would make more sense for Invidia to provide Apple with the drivers, but maybe Apple changes them somehow to fit their proprietary platform. So maybe the better question is not who *makes* the drivers, but rather who *breaks* them? Dunno.. :-)

Seems that right after installing 1.1 16561 the game takes a long time when exiting... At times I almost think its frozen.

A rehash of the original Starcraft, basically. Storyline is formula to the extreme. Nothing new there. Controls (hotkeys) can't be modified at all, so it takes some getting used to. The one big area of improvement is graphics, it took me some tinkering to get it to where the images weren't all herky-jerky on the screen. Overall, the hype surrounding the game will only hold meaning for the diehard fans of the game. Average for play, but great on graphics.

The true quality and depth of the gameplay is best appreciated at the top of the player food chain. Watching pro gaming matches, especially with a running commentary is fascinating.

Medics and goliaths are back ( missing in the beta ) , researches are done in between the missions , not ingame . For those who didn't notice there is a console game in the cantina that is playable . Had a great fun finishing the single player campaign .

Yeah, it's been said that 10.6.4 was a step BACK from .3 in graphics drivers. Apple had better optimized drivers in .4 pre-releases that are now pushed back to .5, god willing. Definitely no later than the second expansion pack.

I am also experiencing massive lags with ULTRA, HIGH, or MEDIUM video settings. The first few missions worked well on MEDIUM, but had to go to LOW on the next mission (protect infested colony from Protoss Purifier). I have a Mac Pro Quad 2.66 GHz with 8 GB RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB video card.

Like I usually tell my friends, Windows is for gaming, OS X is for everything else in life (pretty much all the stuff Windows fails at). It is a shame though that Apple won't step up their game in dealing with making better GPU drivers and Open GL.

Um... first of all... the 8600 series graphics card is a few generations old. This game just came out. There's bound to be some issues. The game runs on high settings on my macbook pro with the 330 GT graphics card. It doesn't matter if you have a quad processor, the GPU does a large portion of the work for the game. And the 8 series has been known to have issues on Macs for quite some time now. Yes, drivers could probably address some of the issues but that is something NVIDIA has to take care of on their end. Apple doesn't make the drivers.

Secondly.... the minimum requirement for this game states you need at least the 9 series NVIDIA card... so you're already playing the game below minimum requirements and complaining about performance issues. Think a little, please.

Well, if it runs so much better in Windows on the same hardware I think it's valid to complain a little at Apple. Yes, it's the graphic card makers who does the drivers, but don't you think Apple has to push them a little? On the Windows side of things AMD releases monthly driver updates for their Radeon series of graphics cards, no wonder they are better tuned. Why can't we see drivers getting more frequent updates on Mac OS X?

Actually STOOP!D M0NK3Y, the minimum requirements for playing the game in OS X is the 8600M GT. The requirements are much lower for Windows so that may be why I am able to play the game on higher settings in Windows. It also probably has to do a lot with the fact that Apple downclocks the GPUs, but thats only in OS X. In Windows, the graphics card will be running at the speeds it normally should.

Funny thing is, on Windows, it should be slower since Boot camp doesn't even install AHCI drivers/enables them let alone installs old sound/graphics drivers.

ST00P!D M0NK3Y: you are mistaken, Apple is the one who makes the drivers for their cards. That's always been the problem and the reason why so many games run so much better under Windows on the same hardware.

@Filipp How can you be so certain it's Apple that does the drivers? Just because the new drivers are released by Apple in the Mac OS X updates it doesn't mean Apple makes them. I'm quite sure it's the graphic card companies that does the drivers. They are the one who best know how to do it and also they have some drivers for Mac OS X on their sites. http://www.nvidia.com/object/Quadro_MacOSX_18.5.2f16.html

I'm sorry, on this particular page it says the minimum is the 8 series, but states on Blizzard's website that the 9 series is the recommended requirement for this game. And again, no... Apple does not make the drivers for the NVIDIA cards... NVIDIA does.
