I know everyone has their own views, and would like this program to work (including me) but it will cause lot's of programs. I am not sure how you would call this app, but there are some of these apps for the mac that are too good to be true, look great and seem they do something but they only cause MORE damage and harm to your mac.

You can also Google it, there's bad bad reviews on the official mac forums about it. There's like these rogue-software for mac going around, so please be careful.

Installs an extraneous and annoying updater that constantly runs in the background and takes up an icon in the menubar.

There are many free programs that can check for duplicates and scan and erase your caches, don't bother with this. You can even find applescripts/automator that do the same thing.

I agree with Bb553.
This was always a pain in the neck as it did not run in the background but at least it wiped one's internet history.
Now they have tried to change it into CleanMyMac, or similar, at the cost of $30.
Avoid.

Avoid; If you either try the Demo or buy this new version of Washing Machine and then decide you don't want it and remove it, the new NetUpdate.app will uninstall any and all of your older Intego utilities that actually work well.

Why does this need an installer to do what it does? I don't want this thing scattering stuff throughout my system with an installer. Why not just make an app you can drag-n-drop into your Applications folder?

If all this does is securely erase your browser cache then it really shouldn't need an installer to do it. I can write an applescript to throw away the cache and do a secure empty trash and not deal with this installer and its scattershot.

I agree entirely. It installed a 'NetUpdate' app, a preference pane, a widget, launch agents and several other 'NetUpdate' preferences.

Why?

Would not Onyx or Cocktail perform the same tasks though not in such a targeted fashion?

Having licensed Washing Machine from its inception, and holding many other licenses to the others in this category, plus using the free ones too, the best answer is that WM is super quick to use. It also has the advantage of showing you how much storage space is actually taken by each apps storage (think along the line of Apple's Activity Monitor). I've not yet set a schedule up to delete files automatically, but that's due to me wishing to see what I want to specially delete. There is a new version out: 2.3.

Cocktail and Onyx are both excellent too. It's all a matter of personal preference.

Washing Machine does more than Onyx or Cocktail. It not only deletes the caches and other files, but it secure deletes them. It overwrites the files so that they cannot ever be recovered. You can set Washing Machine for 1, 7, or 35 overwrites with random data. Onyx and Cocktail do not overwrite the files but merely deletes the reference to them in the file system so they disappear from the Finder, but they still exist (until the System needs the space and then writes over them with another file), so they can be recovered by someone with the proper software, thereby revealing all your info. Washing Machine prevents that from happening by overwriting the files immediately with random data, 1,7, or 35 times.

Cocktail has had a 3 x's overwrite for a long time, in cocktail/preferences. More recently Cocktail has added SRM delete, which uses the U.S. Department of Defense 5220-22M standard for securely erasing magnetic media.

Washing Machine is still great though. I think it can get more/different caches than Cocktail.

Washing Machine has been updated to version 2.2 as of 3.28.2011. it is a free upgrade.

some ideas: once you have some flash caches/cookies in the Flash Caches Catagory, drag the Flash Player Icon onto the Schedule Source icon at the left side of Washing Machine and set up a schedule to delete your flash caches/cookies daily at your desired time, and forget it. so much for flash caches/cookies. Washing Machine is relentless at zapping flash. it gets them in ~/Library/Caches/Adobe/Flash Player and ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player. if your computer is not running at the scheduled time, it will delete them as soon as you start your computer. i set Washing Machine’s secure clean level to “Medium” for flash cookies, which overwrites 7 times and takes about 2 seconds. Washing Machine’s highest level is “High” and overwrites 35 times. the Secure Clean level is set in the preferences and applies to everything you clean.

in the preferences, it takes a minute to set up the Cookies Preference because you have to manually set up the cookies (domains) you wish to keep — i keep about 30 to 40 domains — but once you have it set up, you can set a schedule to delete all cookies that aren’t essential to you.

double-clicking on the browser icons in the cookies list gives you extensive information on each and every cookie. you can change all information of cookies in this list, including the expiration date if you wish, although i don’t use this option.

Washing Machine also finds all kinds of caches for programs on your computer, some of which take up quite a bit of space.

aside from the 80+ presets, you can also add your own personal Clean List to the Source catagory and have Washing Machine clean whatever you want it to clean on a schedule or manually.

simple to use - even fun - no need at all to read instructions, well-made optimized software by Intego. if you like utilities like this, you’re sure to have fun and keep your machine more secure and clean with Washing Machine.

Washing Machine makes it easy to get rid of the junk that’s making your Mac slow: duplicate files, and old programs you never use. Plus, it enables you to automatically organize things so both you and your Mac operate more efficiently.
  • Reclaim - Lose that unwanted file baggage

  • Duplicates - Get rid of useless clones
Chances are, you have a lot of redundant files on your computer; not backups, but duplicates you don’t even know about (and certainly don’t need). Washing Machine identifies these useless hangers-on and lets you get rid of them in a click. Making more space for things that matter.
  • Organize - Whip your desktop, dock and files into shape
Clutter is the enemy of efficiency. Washing Machine can automatically organize your heap of desktop files into the right folders. It also shows you which apps you use most often and allows you to drag and drop them to and from your Dock with ease.
  • And more...
