Remove-It overview

Remove-It is an uninstall utility that uses a special search algorithm (Levenshtein Distance algorithm) to find all related files and deletes them when asked.

Applications distribute several files throughout your system storage devices. Deleting an application itself is mostly not enough and will leave several files untouched.

Features:
  • Simple drag-and-drop
  • Ghost Mode: Background mode. Drop something into the trash and iTrash pops up. Works on all available volumes.
  • Expert mode: To find even more possible related files.
  • Application lister: shows all installed applications on all volumes (not just the Applications Folder)
  • Finds visible and hidden files.
  • Scans inside folders for applications.
  • Protect default applications.
  • Protect custom applications and folders.
  • Protect related applications files (.plist, application support, ...)
  • Does not need Spotlight to be enabled.
  • Localized: English, Dutch, Polish, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Slovak, Turkish, Persian, and French.

Simple but very efficient to remove apps from your system. I did find a bug but it was quickly fixed by the developer. I can only recommend this.

I've been using the excellent freeware program AppCleaner for a number of years, and it has always worked well. The company (FreeMacSoft) keeps it up to date. It does not find every file associated with a program one is removing (I am just about certain that is true for other such software, including Remove-it), but that is not an issue with me, as I just then use another excellent free program, EasyFind, to locate the remaining files. AppCleaner and EasyFind, a definite winning combination!

I have been using this for years and am very satisfied with it. Very easy to use and always finds the most linked files compared to the other tools. Also, the developer is very friendly and helpful. So I can warmly recommend this tool.

I moved to Remove-It from AppDelete, which always worked well but unfortunately was abandoned. It has a similar interface and methodology. However, I've grown increasingly unhappy with Remove-It. It never operated as well as AppDelete. It does not "package" its deleted content in the way AppDelete did (which made it easy to reverse a removal when necessary). In the last year or so, it has been finding increasingly many app components to delete that should *not* be deleted (because they actually belong to another app, or a newer version of the deleted app). And it has been leaving behind material that should be deleted. Just today, I used it to remove an app that installs components that cause Apple's osascript scripting engine to fail. It removed the app and several of its components, but it failed to identify the offending component as belonging to the app. I had to locate and delete it manually. My advice: Either look elsewhere, or be very cautious using Remove-It—inspect its file removal list very carefully. That will require that you know a bit about how apps work under-the-covers. That's the kind of knowledge that Remove-It should ideally *not* require its users to have.

I have been using RemoveIT (formerly itrash) for more than 5 years now and I am still very satisfied. I often test other apps and if I don't like them, I can easily remove them. All linked files are easily and quickly removed. Definitely worth a try, if you haven't done so already.

Now has this constantly repeating message when I try to uninstall an app: "This application uses unregistered plugins from Monkeybread Software. Please inform the developer of this application that they need to purchase a license from Monkeybread Software to remove this message. Thank you. Since the tragic ending of AppDelete, Remove-It has been the best and most complete app deletion tool I've tested.

Remove It (formerly known as iTrash) is for me still the best way to uninstall applications. Occasionally I use other uninstallers to see if there are better tools on the market, but Remove It almost always returns the most linked files. Happy with it for sure.

Before deleting a certain application using Remove-it, I also checked Trashme which I use most often. Trashme found 11 files 89.5 MB, Remove-it found 10 files 35.2 MB. Trashme found 4 files with 1 KB each, Remove-it found only one 1 KB file. 2 zero kb files with Trashme, one zero kb file found by Remove-it. Remove-it lists the biggest file as application file at 23 MB. Trashme lists the same file at 79 MB, which is the actual size shown in Finder. So, this is a question, not review. Why Remove-it lists the certain application file at 23 MB, and not 79 MB ? (Both list same one 10 MB file in Containers).

This is kind of strange, but I'm almost positive that when I left my review on 1/24/21 (below) there were no other reviews posted. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to note that Remove-It was the successor app to iTrash. (Which took me a while to figure out on my own.) Other reviewers (see MichaelHaeusler) had already made this clear. MacUpdate seems to have grafted the older reviews of iTrash onto Remove-It, which makes sense for the sake of continuity, and perhaps I left my review before that process was complete. Oddly enough, there is still nothing in Remove-It's description that mentions that is iTrash renamed. I just wonder if the developer was threatened with legal action for using the "iTrash" name, which evidently was used for a now long-gone and unsupported app by a different vendor. That vendor was "Circus Ponies," which I Googled, and which went out of business in 2016 after 13 years in operation. That original, now long defunct, "iTrash" still shows up in MacUpdate's search with a disclaimer saying it is no longer supported by its developer. (Really, MacUpdate, why bother keeping it here at all?) -SB

In what must be the clumsiest rollout in history, Remove-It, version 1, has replaced the former iTrash, version 5, which has disappeared from MacUpdate -- except for an identically named ancient utility (from an evidently now defunct company called "Circus Ponies") last updated in 2013. If you open iTrash version 5 and click "Check for Updates," it tells you that version 6 is available. Nothing about Remove-It. The very name has been expunged from the developer's website -- no mention of the change in name and version. (Really guys? Is it that hard to send an email out to existing loyal customers and clue them in to the changes, instead of making them figure it out for themselves? At least it's a free update -- nothing to sneeze at.) The exception: if you attempt to download earlier versions of "Remove-It," they download as iTrash. Anyway, the good news (I hope) is that for its maiden run, the first app I had Remove-it remove was -- you guessed it -- iTrash 5. It found 9 files and dumped them. Not quite all, but that's why I also do a scan with Find Any File. I've always liked iTrash and I wish the developer, OsxBytes, of this program well. Four stars -- one knocked off for less than stellar customer communication on a major change like this. Next time, it'll be five stars. -SB

I was looking for a future-proof (i.e. arm64-ready) replacement for Synium's CleanApp, and Remove-It (formerly iTrash) is imho the best tool available. I also tested AppCleaner and AppDelete, but only Remove-It was able to match CleanApp's results. However, you need to be careful with Expert Mode… depending on the app you want to remove, some of the files in the results might not be associated with your app, and deleting those could cause problems. So you should use Expert Mode only if you really know the ins & outs of macOS, know what every file's role is etc. After deleting an app and its files with Remove-It, you should also consider manually searching your macOS volume for more remnants… I use Thomas Tempelmann's FindAnyFile, and I usually search for the app's bundle ID and display name, and sometimes FaF will detect additional files that Remove-It missed. Last, but not least, OSXBytes customer support is fantastic.

They did not only rename the app but made it even better. Ones in a while I test drive all uninstaller side by side and although iTrash already was on top of the game, this one reveals even more related filed in many occasions. Fantastic update and awesome app!

It is still incomprehensible that Apple does not build a decent way in macOS that when you delete an application, it automatically removes all related files as well. Anyway, as long as Apple does not provide this in its own OS, I highly recommend Remove-it! It is the only one that finds and removes almost every linked file. A really great tool

Bought this to replace AppDelete as it was running extremely slow under Catalina (10.15.7). Remove-it worked once until I clicked on "expert mode". That froze the App after the App notified me that Expert Mode might delete files unrelated to the App I'm trying to delete. I force-quite it, and when I opened it again, Remove-it took almost as long to collect the associated files as the defunct AppDelete. WTF!

iTrash is by very far the best uninstaller and for Catalina the only that removes all related files of the application you want to remove. All others similar apps do not work right with Catalina. recommended
