Myth II: Soulblighter

01 June 2013

Destruction reigns supreme in this 3D world of war (demo available).

Overview

Myth II: Soulblighter boasts numerous improvements to the game engine and added features that improve gameplay.

In Myth II destruction reigns supreme. Castle walls will crumble under a barrage of Dwarven mortar fire. Drawbridges will lower before your besieging army. Flaming arrows will rain down from battlements, lighting the ground beneath you. Dark wizards will hurl deadly sorceries at your ranks, scattering even your bravest warriors.

Myth II: Soulblighter is a unique strategy game, set in a 3D world of dangerous alliances and ancient evil, where all beings tremble before the wrath of Soulblighter, cruelest and most cunning of the evil Fallen Lords.

What's new in Myth II: Soulblighter

Version 1.8.0:
  • New game type: "King of the Map". This mode uses territories flags and weighted king of the hill scoring based on number of flags held.
  • New "Rehost" and "Restart" buttons in the multiplayer quit/pause dialog for the host, so that it's no longer necessary to drop or suicide to restart the game.
  • New hosting option to display narrations and cutscenes during cooperative multiplayer.
  • Extended zoom: up to 5x in replays and when observing (requires DX11/OpenGL).
  • New "Motion Interpolation" option to make the game even smoother.
  • Improved New Game and Multiplayer New Game dialogs, with enhanced and streamlined plugin management.
  • Numerous performance optimizations to improve game launch speed, save game load time, and CPU use while playing.
  • Access the complete release notes.

Nice! I haven't played this game in almost ten years, but I still have my original CD copy, and am surprised how well it works, even on a completely different OS and hardware architecture than the last system I played this on (an original Sawtooth G4 tower running Mac OS 9). The sprites look pretty dated, but otherwise this still looks (and sounds) great, and most importantly is still fun. Thanks to the developers who continue to maintain this project for their ongoing efforts to preserve this classic game.

The volunteer led group of Mythers called ProjectMagma once again show why Myth 2 is timeless. This new version includes a HUGE amount of gameplay enhancements and system performance upgrades. Keep the good times rolling. Make a free account on Marius.net and join us online in the fun!

I played this game consistently for 5 years from when it first came out. It is perfect, and the people who continue to maintain it are geniuses.

Apparently a bug has been uncovered which has caused the developers to temporarily withdraw the Soulblighter 1.7.1 release until it has been fixed: Please be patient!

The download link is to the still-current-stable version 1.7.0. Whoever updated the description is describing the BETA 1.7.1. If you want to try out the BETA 1.7.1, go to the following page and read the details: http://tain.totalcodex.net/items/show/myth-ii-1-7-1-public-beta Seems to me someone jumped the gun on posting this as an update.

Thank you Project Magma for keeping Myth II alive. I wish there were more games being maintained by their communities of players like this one is. After over 10 years, Myth II is still playable on the latest OS versions and hardware, changes that have rendered many other games obsolete. The enhanced ground textures are an awesome bonus. My one regret is that even used copies of the game discs, still necessary to play the full version of the game, are increasingly rare and still very expensive. Though this is an unlikely wish, I think it would be a neat idea to try to port this game to iPhone. It would turn on a whole new population to this style of game and its volumes of user-generated content, without terribly taxing the system requirements.

Not sure what is being updated or why the version number is 1.6. The 1.6 has been out for some 5 months. The modification date has changed (and slight app name modification) but still the same version number. Loathing and Fear both remain at their respective version numbers, too. Still, I've had no issues w/ performance on the previous versions, even on an Intel Mac. Would expect this version to maintain if not improve upon that performance. >

I too am very grateful this game has continued to be developed. I hope companies continue to release their older games to the open source community. Myth II plus WW II plugins wasted many hours years ago and will start to do so again. :-)

It seems there was a Problem with the original Mac Auto Updater. If the one here is still the original you should try Http://www.projectmagma.net to find the new updater. it works fine.

AGH! I installed the second beta and when I opened the program, I noticed something was up when it wouldn't change resolutions. It kept my current resolution and left me with a small 600x480 in the top left corner. After doing a reinstall, my problem was fixed. But the game kept crashing when I tried going to Preferences. Then when I hosted a game, clicking on Options to change the maps and such, it crashed again. I don't recommend installing this update cause there seems to be some problems with it still. Next time there's an update, I'm gonna make a copy and install it on that and see if it works. here's the 1.5b1 which worked great and had no problems I noticed: http://projectmagma.net/files/sb/Myth2_15_PB1.pkg.sit

Wow. What can I say. When I was ten years old, I was looking for demos online to find a good game. I had aboslutely no idea that I would happen to come across Myth. To make a long story short, I'm fifteen years old now, and I still play the old, master work of art. I bought a PS2, I bought a GBA, and I bought an Xbox. I'm a teenager and wow. I still play this six/seven year old game. What more can I say? O ya, I only have a Mac OS 9.2 but hey, the word of this game has to get out one way or another! BUY IT! I promise, you will not be disatisfied.

This is one of the best computer games ever made and it's great to see the Mac OS X port and the continuing minor improvements. This is beginning to remind me of tabletop wargaming systems, that live on and are played for many, many years - sometimes even after the demise of the companies that published them. Myth 2 for Mac can be found in many bargain bins for $10 or less. It continues to be a bargain even at the $15 full-retail price at Amazon or other stores, especially since you will soon be able to get all the scearios from the original Myth game from Project Magma, too. Not to mention all the incredible fan-created solo scenarios and multiplayer maps. The free, fan-created total conversions such as World War II, Civil War, "Pirates" and Sci-Fi and even such things as lego soldiers and little green army men - the quality of these add-ons is a tribute to their designers and allows nearly infinite variety of play. The Myth series is not for the hack-and-slash crowd. Sure, you can bull your way through most scenarios and there is plenty of fun to be had watching things blow up and fly across the map in bloody bits. However, really fine mental exercise is in store if you take the time to learn to use formations, tactical synergy, maneuver, and terrain. Computer games are finally reaching a level of maturity in their execution that changing technology does not require that masterpieces like Myth need to be abandoned. I'm looking forward to seeing Myth continue to provide excellent competitive experiences and solo / cooperative challenges.

The demo alone is GREAT FUN over LAN (PC and MAC can battle eachother). Seeing this led me to dust off my old Myth 1 disc. After installing all the upgrades both Myth I and II demo run great in Classic mode! But dam those idiot duh-warfs, you've got to babysit them! fun fun fun

This game has just never gotten old. Playing single player storyline was challenging ,and fun. Then playing online provided years of fun with new maps, people, ranks, and oh yeah...Screw you Microsoft. Bungie forever

Although the graphics look out-of-date now, the game is superb. Great storyline and atmosphere, and very challenging. Months of fun for me! Haven't tried this particular update, though.
