FunctionFlip2.2.4

26 July 2015

Toggles the function keys on your MacBook.

Overview

FunctionFlip turned out to be my solution. I like the media keys on my MacBook keyboard - just not all of them. Fat-fingered that I am, I regularly skip tracks when I just want to pause. Disabling all of the keys just won't do, because I use the brightness and volume keys every day.

FunctionFlip individually controls your Macbook or Macbook Pro's function keys, turning special keys back to regular F-keys, or vice-versa.

FunctionFlip requires that "Enable access for assistive devices" be checked on the Universal Access pane in System Preferences.

I don’t want to use the media playback keys to control iTunes – accidentally fast forwarding through a song is a nuisance. But I find some of a Mac’s F key functions useful, FunctionFlip does its job perfectly, allowing me to change just those keys.

Works fine in OS X 10.10 Yosemite. If it complains about privacy settings, uninstall and reinstall shall fix the problem.

Strangely, it doesn't work properly since the OS X 10.8.5 update. I have to stop and restart it many times a day.

Have it installed for ages and it does it’s job in the background, like a purring cat. Strangely the lastest version 2.2.2 doesn’t work right on my MacBook, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Problem is: It’s not possible to tick any of the checkboxes on or off, mouse clicks somehow don’t get registered as it seems.

What a nightmare! Installed this app thinking it would solve the loss of my function keys on my MBP. However it is UNINSTALLABLE. No matter how much I've tried this app rewrites the core ability of the Function keys and they never work the same again. I've emailed the developer at his 2 different email addresses more than a dozen times and have received absolutely no response.

causing problems in 10.6.7 with ignored mouse clicks, email so far has gone unanswered. very disappointing because its a very handy program that has let me repurpose the function keys while keeping the media keys working.

Seems to have stopped working for me. This happens occasionally, but I used to be able to just stop it and start it again, and that isn't fixing it anymore. It just has no effect on the F keys at all.

Very awesome program, thank you for the update for 10.6! It seems however that the new version thinks it is number 1.2 and when you click to check for updates it says there is a new update when in fact I just downloaded and installed the latest...

And on the same day he updates it for 10.6, he catches a bug, fixes it, and releases the fix. That's so awesome. Thanks Kevin.

The iTunes hot-keys were a terrible step backwards towards making a Mac look more like a cheap PC "Media" klutterboard. FunctionFlip restores your keyboard's Mac-ishness quickly, simply, and invisibly.

I found it didn't really work for me. It would disable the printed functions on the keys, but they wouldn't work as actual functions keys. Just wondering what file in the OS this alters. Ever since I uninstalled it, my keyboard and trackpad will quit working. I can use a bluetooth mouse and I can use the Keyboard Viewer. I can even Share Screen from another computer, but the local keyboard and trackpad won't work until I put the thing to sleep and wake it up again. That seems to fix it for a little while. Perhaps the developer can comment on what file may be affected to cause this?

Great addition to my MacBook Pro. I have configured FF so I no longer have to hold down the "Fn" key to adjust the volume, but I still need to use the "Fn" key for every other function key. This has the added benefit of enabling me to adjust the volume on my MBP with an external keyboard using the corresponding function keys.

While I like the prefpane, I found I can not fast forward and rewind when it is active. Skipping tracks works fine though. Is this a know limitation?

I need this .app because I have no use for the brightness keys (because I have a Dell screen), no use for the iTunes keys because my keyboard shortcuts set in SizzlingKeys are more convenient and responsive, so function flip opens up opens up the use of those function keys for me. I hate holding the 'fn' key. It fn sucks lol. I would rather this .app be in System preferences because it's cluttering my menulet area. I can understand why some would still want the menulet as an option even if it was put in System Prefs. System prefs just seems like a more appropriate spot.
