FunctionFlip turned out to be my solution. I like the media keys on my MacBook keyboard - just not all of them. Fat-fingered that I am, I regularly skip tracks when I just want to pause. Disabling all of the keys just won't do, because I use the brightness and volume keys every day.

FunctionFlip individually controls your Macbook or Macbook Pro's function keys, turning special keys back to regular F-keys, or vice-versa.

FunctionFlip requires that "Enable access for assistive devices" be checked on the Universal Access pane in System Preferences.

Have it installed for ages and it does it’s job in the background, like a purring cat.

Strangely the lastest version 2.2.2 doesn’t work right on my MacBook, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

Problem is: It’s not possible to tick any of the checkboxes on or off, mouse clicks somehow don’t get registered as it seems.

v2.2 and v2.1 are working, though.

What a nightmare! Installed this app thinking it would solve the loss of my function keys on my MBP. However it is UNINSTALLABLE. No matter how much I've tried this app rewrites the core ability of the Function keys and they never work the same again.

I've emailed the developer at his 2 different email addresses more than a dozen times and have received absolutely no response.

causing problems in 10.6.7 with ignored mouse clicks, email so far has gone unanswered.

very disappointing because its a very handy program that has let me repurpose the function keys while keeping the media keys working.

Unfortunately, the situation seems to have gotten even worse in Lion. I hate having to hold down the function key to change my system volume, but this once-useful utility is now causing more problems than it solves.

Seems to have stopped working for me. This happens occasionally, but I used to be able to just stop it and start it again, and that isn't fixing it anymore. It just has no effect on the F keys at all.

A restart fixed it. Certainly hope I don't have to do that every time this craps out though.

Absolutely perfect. Wanted to easily assign f5 & f6 on my new MacBook, and this made it really simple.

Thanks!

Very awesome program, thank you for the update for 10.6! It seems however that the new version thinks it is number 1.2 and when you click to check for updates it says there is a new update when in fact I just downloaded and installed the latest...

Strangely, it doesn't work properly since the OS X 10.8.5 update. I have to stop and restart it many times a day.

I found it didn't really work for me. It would disable the printed functions on the keys, but they wouldn't work as actual functions keys.

Just wondering what file in the OS this alters. Ever since I uninstalled it, my keyboard and trackpad will quit working. I can use a bluetooth mouse and I can use the Keyboard Viewer. I can even Share Screen from another computer, but the local keyboard and trackpad won't work until I put the thing to sleep and wake it up again. That seems to fix it for a little while.

Perhaps the developer can comment on what file may be affected to cause this?

While I like the prefpane, I found I can not fast forward and rewind when it is active. Skipping tracks works fine though. Is this a know limitation?
