I've been a long time user of Tous Comptes Faits — that came for free on the French MacOS install CD, centuries ago ;-) — and had a hard time finding a decent equivalent for post-Rosetta OSes, that had a French localization and more or less the same features...
I only found this and Realbank (that is no more featured here at MU), I've tried both and decided for iCompta because of the more fluid interface.
I too use it for my personal finances, it has functions that I'll never use but I think some things could be better designed or easier (no operations presets, for example, I had to find a workaround with a dummy account where I put those operations for their labels to appear in the recently used ones when I create a new operation; the automatic operations are manageable but it could be easier — I'm not a big fan of the right panel for ruling everything).
But it's globally a good product and one of the best 3 ones I know.

iCompta 6 is an absolutely wonderful finance app. It is loaded with an excellent set of features that very well suit my personal finance needs. The way it manages accounts and handles transactions couldn't be easier. And for the price, well, for me, at $26.99, it's a steal. As simple and easy as iCompta 6 is, don't let that fool you; it is a complete professional solution for those with higher financial demands. However, I cannot say how efficient it is at that level as I only use it, as mentioned above, for my own personal needs. I am not affiliated with the developer or his/her company in any way other that I am just a happy customer, appreciative of a job well done. Thank you. Question to MacUpdate: why is the negative 1-star review for version 5.1.17 at the top of the reviews list? Current version is 6.0.13.

Complete Bookkeeping, both personal and professional, as an independent it works well for me. Interface is not the "sexiest" but there is no hidden subscription cost and the base template for invoices was much improved (allowing to make adjustments fairly painlessly). Also it gets updated very regularly so you know this dev. is not into "abandonware". Good job.

I have spent quite a bit of my energy and money to find a right app to organize my financial data. Before iCompta, I have seriously used Banktivity (iBank), Moneyspire (Fortora Fresh)… and even bought a YNaBudget (but never managed to import anything from other programs, confusing concept, even worst than anything is their new subscription policy). Moneyspire was ok, but it started giving me errors and their iOS is limited. My last chance was iCompta and Im so happy to have it. It allows me to locally sync (!!!) my OS and iOS app, no errors, UI very clear, imports and exports many formats, even translated my previous categories very well… Everything that I have ever wanted is in iCompta (ok, maybe if they can improve the scheduling module e.g. Chronicle). More importantly, I hope they stay on this path. So with Cashculator (love their simple, easy horizontal and vertical viewing system) and Chronicle (used only on my Mac - no cloud storing - thank you) and iCompta btw my Mac and iPhone — Im all set.

I have been struggling to find a Mac OS personal finance app, and let me assure you, iCompta is not it. I downloaded the demo and have spent an hour bashing my head against the screen trying to accomplish even the simplest of tasks. This app seems to have been completely redesigned for finger input--iPad, I assume--and is utterly frustrating to use on a MacBook. The UI is impossibly convoluted and non-intuitive and cluttered, cluttered, CLUTTERED. It seems to have been designed by some old school developer who thinks You Should Already Know Where To Look for whatever you're trying to do. You know that guy? The one who tells you, "Oh, you want to see your balance? All you need to do is hit ctrl-option B and then go to the menu here and click on 'transactions' and then when that comes up reveal the right pane up here and select 'balance' in the pulldown." You know, THAT guy.

There aren't even pop ups when you hold your cursor over the icons to tell you what they are. So you click on everything until you discover the "built in browser" which you use to import your bank activity... by downloading a QIF or CSV like you would manually anyway. And then when you actually import your bank activity? Oh God, the activation screens are like pulling fingernails. Just impossibly over-complicated. And it doesn't help that almost every screen goes outside the box on two sides. Ugh.

I know I'll probably get comments about how I Just Don't Get it, but the fact is that if I download a demo and an hour later I'm still completely baffled by the program then it's pretty much a UI DISASTER. And, honestly, it is without a doubt one of the most cluttered and unintuitive apps I've seen in a long time. Oh, and I almost forgot: Even though I saved my program to Dropbox it will not remember that. It won't even list it in the "Open recent" pulldown. I have to go to my Dropbox and double click the file.

This program is a mess, people.

P.S. I should add that bank access is a subscription fee.

Really too bad the templating system makes it pretty hard to make nice professional-looking invoices.. it could be a killer app, I don't understand why the dev. cannot see that. It could be the all-in-one accounting app for small businesses. I'll never understand other humans I think lol

Fantastic app. Powerful but still pretty easy to use, very customisable. + Incredibly well designed and feature rich iOS companion apps. + Finally a finance app developer that gets syncing right! Syncing over iCloud, Dropbox or local network. You don't have to move your file into the iCloud or Dropbox folder to sync, but just leave it in your own folder structure – the copies it creates in the cloud are just temporary for syncing. Syncing is very reliable, merging the data, you never lose anything (unlike many other apps that struggle at syncing…) + Very responsive developer, quick support, very helpful discussions in the forums. Developer has a very open policy about future development of the app. Seems he puts a lot of time, effort and love into iCompta. + Well designed, Mac-like UI. And well, it's a beautiful app… + Quick and easy entering of transactions + Budgeting with envelope system, or, if you don't like that, with the more common progress bars + Very good at importing bank data. Especially the CSV import (which is still important dealing with international banks) is really refined and you can tinker the import options to a high degree (and save them for later use), so you don't have to "clean up" the transactions later… + Powerful features, easy to use: Subcategories, owner (for each transaction), assign transaction to a project. Splits are very easy to use, single transactions can very easily be excluded from statistics or budget, etc. etc. etc. + Fine tuning of reports and charts is incredibly sophisticated, powerful (with use of conditions, compound conditions, etc.) + Compared to the competition and considering the features, this app has at a ridiculously low price tag. And well, the iOS version is even cheaper, 4$ for the iOS app that works both for the iPhone and the iPad – I've never seen such a well designed piece of software at such a low price. - The help file / manual is not searchable. Couldn't find a PDF version of it - No support for MT940 (which isn't much of a deal for the most part…)

Dunno what to think of this app anymore. I use it to manage my money flow, just ver basic use, enter my incomes and my spendings, I wanted to finally try using this for invoicing as well, it can do that to some extent it seems, though in a very unsexy manner.. it is soooo geeky in that respect, so I kept using my “old” billing software for that this whole past year.. at least I know how to use and don't spend hours in it (GrandTotal.. it's a bit of a one-trick poney but it does it well if only invoicing and nothing else),. Here one is supposed to create templates using syntax, all that from scratch, no template is provided (well a very basic one.. sort of like “there, deal with it”). I usually hope an app is there to help me save time, not learn a whole new trade.. I imagine the chosen syntax engine is powerful.. but at the same time I'd rather something that works more or less out of the box. Maybe sometimes developers are so geeky they thing everyone is ? And don't think even think that in depth tutorials etc are required.

A great app, used it since it came out.. v.5 looks good.. BUT have now discovered Easy Books that can replace my iCompta/GrandTotal/TimeLog combo, so I will not update to 5. I found what I need for my all-in-one app for my little freelance business.

For years I've used Prospects to manage my finances, but since the developer has abandoned it I was forced to find a new financial application. After testing out about a dozen different ones (see Finance, Money, MoneyDance, MoneyGuru, MoneyManager Ex, MoneyWell, Squirrel, Finance2Go, iFinance and a few others), I decided to buy iCompta. The Good: - Very easy to use and enter transactions - Lots of reports - Does a great job importing QIF files - Looks fantastic and acts very Mac-like - Has a companion app for the iPad/iPhone which syncs very easily - Great price (especially with 25% discount) for the program and app. I paid under $30 for both while may other finance programs are $50 or more for just the Mac version - Stable. I haven't had iCompta crash or needed a Force Quit yet The Bad: - No home page view that gives you a net worth view of your accounts - Can't move the transaction detail pane to the right side which makes it a pain (pun intended) for left-handed users - The animations are a bit slow for the reports The Ugly: - Doesn't hand stock investments very well. there is no way to input # of shares or automatically download updated pricing. - Not a lot of documentation. For a program that has this many features, you'd expect a comprehensive manual or help file. Instead you're redirected to a webpage with only basic instructions on how to use the program.

iCompta for Mac: It's a really nice software. Easy to use and all features that a finance software need. But the best thing is, you can use it also on the iPhone. iCompta for iPhone: The iPhone-App looks exactly the same and has the same features. You can sync via Dropbox and WiFi. And the iPhone-App is also a standalone-product. There is no other software which is so simple and can be used on Mac AND iPhone. A must-have!
