Great application, great idea!
There is a few applications trying to do this out there but this one is the most promising on osx. As programmer I reuse my code all the time. By breaking code into snippets we are more productive. I for one hate to use IDE code generation from messy toolbars etc...about the only thing I can tolerate is text mates bundles. Would be nice if one day this integrates with that...an auto populated bundle for your snippets maybe over a popup up window...who knows....
Anyway I like to use my OWN code...this makes it possible. I tried things like devonThink, text files, ide integration...all too slow ot too locked in...this app is needed I am surprised we don't have one already on osx all fully developed up. Many people code on osx now....
It needs a lot of work still but is shaping up and the developer is working hard and pretty fast also currently. I have seen him speak to users often...that is rare these days. He is well thought of with his users. For those wishing to code away on a Mac this is a great bit of software to get stuck into.
It needs better documentation I think they lack time to do that, there is workflows for snippets you can use anyway but they work nice in here but not explained for those new to snippets. That needs worked on. You don't just dump stuff in...should they do it...don't need to per se but it would be nice to write a page on snippet theory for newbies.
The trick is to think small...you can put in big snippets, I often do, but what I use the most is small snippets and objects. Projects are never 100% the same so the larger you go the harder it gets. Keep it small and modular but YMMV. Ofc that takes longer....
The tags make this very fast to find...when your into the 1000's with snippets you need to search there is no more drilling down possible. This is clever to be in here so early.
Syncing, exporting, multi level folders are what is missing to make this a wow app...and more customisation in the editor window...some cool stuff like transparency (background images and split views etc). The syntax highlighting is really shaping up, it won't be long before we have full text mate syntax highlighting in there I hope. But they know all this and are working on it....
Personally I think the code sharing is daft and works like hell...but the technology they have for it probably can be swung into a better thought out model. I WILL NOT share my code with others - I do this for a living! I don't want to share via my snippet application I will do that in my own time at sites/groups I choose to...so that is silly to think I would ever use that or any pro coder would. But it could be used to be a private way to show potential employers your code snippets (same tech with a better spin)...to employers seeing a full house there is gold and you could do nothing just let the app do it for you. So the technology is good but the concept currently a bit daft. But YMMV on that one.
All in all I support this application, use it and hope they get the support to make it work...it is pretty simple currently...but they have so many good ideas emerging etc it could be a real winner this one!
Buy it to support them as it really probably is not worth the price but if you want to see an app like this on osx with all the features we need to avoid IDE nonsense...well pay up like I did and we will get soon. Currently I think we are paying to get the app developed over it being actually worth it...but that is part of this game...it makes sense...this has happened many times on osx...it is what makes us not windows, and not dodgy freebie linux.
I am critical because this app is one of those few apps you see on osx that has real potential and by saying what needs done we can help the developer match the application to our needs.
BUY IT AND GET THE SNIPPET BUG! :)
