Nocturne is (yet another) simple app for switching a computer to night vision mode. It does, however, add a few things:
  • Proper color correction in monochrome modes - you don't lose all your blues or reds when you tint the screen.
  • Window shadow toggling - if glowing windows aren't your thing.
  • Background removal - hide the desktop picture so you don't see a inverted version.
Requirements
Intel/PPC, Mac OS X 10.4 or later

Hmm. I just ran across a program in the Mac App Store called "Brightness +" which is very obviously Nocturne. I decided to gamble 99 cents and see what it does. In general, it works fine. But you cannot invert the menu bar. Nothing happens. It will, however, dim the menu bar if you wish.

You may use this extension to fix images and video inverted by Nocturne in Google Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/images-inverter/glhdmahaicellakggkjdgngimcphbfjd

No flickering here so far on 10.8.2
My settings are (ticked)
Monochrome
Invert hue
Invert menu bar
Going to leave like that in case altering the settings change anything.

I think I needed to first trash my old preferences file. Thanks for verifying its functionality for me.

Only those specific settings you identified prevent the flashing problem. I had not checked "Invert hue," and when I opened System Preferences, the menubar flashed like crazy. Checking it stopped that problem.

In that case Lvdoc I'll def. leave settings as they are, maybe the guy who updated it for Mountain Lion will recognize that there is a problem with 10.8.2 and issue an update. Thanks for posting back.

I gave up on it awhile ago. Either of these has worked well for me, for getting a black menu bar:

Granted, these are a more permanent approach, and Nocturne has features not found in these themes. But if all you want is a black menu bar, these have given me no issues.

Nocturne worked well for me in Lion. The recent change to Mountain Lion has caused it to flicker whenever there are pop up notifications on the screen, just like the other reviewer mentioned. Hope the developer will see this comment and fix it.

I had no troubles with it in Lion, but my menubar becomes very flickery in Mountain Lion. I couldn't find a way to directly e-mail the developer, so I hope he sees this here.

Extremely buggy in Lion. Settings don't change when going bank and forth from day to night mode. Support for spaces is buggy. Adjusting the white point color in Tint Colors is almost impossible. Adjust screen brightness is useless.

Love it. There's however at least one bug. When switching to night, going monochrome and tinting the colors with user-defined values, the tint remains after switching back to standard day setting. You have to actually quit Nocturne to return to normal again. Not good.

Some ideas for improvement: (a) Save presets plus presets menu; (b) Option to hide the dock or at least lose the dock background

I'm on 10.6.6 too (i7 MBP). Strange.

My Nocturne settings are: Invert screen / Hide desktop / Disable shadow / Adjust screen brightness (slider roughly at 80%) / Monochrome / Tint colors (black = black & white = user-defined color).
There are currently no troubleshooting comments. If you are experiencing a problem with this app, please post a comment.
