PostCheck2.5

30 September 2016

Plugin for Apple Address Book that looks up missing info.

Overview

PostCheck is a plugin for Apple's Address Book that provides an efficient, one-click way to lookup missing ZIP+4 Codes, Cities and States and will format addresses to meet USPS standards. Also provides Group Lookups.

What's new in PostCheck

Version 2.5:

Notes: Now requires OS X 10.9 or later running on a 64-bit Intel processor
Although Finder indicates that this is version 2.0, the developer states that this is version 2.5.

  • New Gatekeeper-compatible installer app, rather than a simple command-line tool
  • Now distributed on a macOS 10.12 Sierra-compatible signed disk image, rather than a ZIP file; required because of Gatekeeper's new Path Randomization security feature
  • Worked around a bug in macOS Sierra that would cause Contacts.app to crash
  • Fixed the PostCheck menu bug where the menu would get stuck on "PostCheck Preferences" or "PostCheck Group Lookup"
  • Now the menu always says "PostCheck", but holding down the Option key or Shift key does the appropriate action
  • PostCheck is now 64-bit only

I purchased this quite some time ago and I paid $5 for it as I recall. I have used it continuously ever since and it works flawlessly. This actually gets your snail mail delivered faster. Great little tool IMO

Author says v2.5 is not compatible with Mojave 10.14, as Apple no longer supports Address Book plugins.

The demo allows for five lookups, which is not nearly enough. Three lookups resulted in a dialog box stating multiple addresses were found, but it did not show them. Will the paid version show them? One of five lookups worked. I'm not going to give a poor rating for this because it *may* work well, but I am also not ready to pay 100% of $10 for a 20% success rate from a 2-minute test drive. I suggest increasing the demo to 20 lookups. I see that others have posted similar experiences in the past.

This works only with Address Book, and not with Apples 10.8 replacement (Contacts). If you're using the latest operating system, don't bother downloading PostCheck (but what a great need need this program could meet if it kept up with its host).

The new version 2.0 works fine with OS 10.6.7 and is a free upgrade for previous owners. Hint for previous owners: Don't just click on the MacUpdate download link or you'll end up with the demo version. Go to the developer's web site, enter your e-mail address used for the original purchase and you'll get a link for the full version.

I was hesitant at first about purchasing a license, but in my correspondence with the developer I made the purchase without reservations. Those who know the USPS system also know that this little software jewel can literally save days in sending mail via USPS.
