Apple iPod Shuffle Reset Utility

1.0.3
25 March 2008

Restores first and second generation iPod shuffle.

Overview

iPod Reset Utility restores the following iPod models back to their factory settings, when iTunes is unable to do so:

  • iPod shuffle (1st Generation)
  • iPod shuffle (2nd Generation)

The restore process completely erases all music and data on your iPod, and installs current iPod software on it.

For detailed information on this Update, please visit this website: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305204

Note: iPod Reset Utility is intended for use only with the iPod models listed above; other iPods are not supported. If you are not sure which iPod you have, see Apple Support article 61688: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61688

This app gave me hope as I can't mount or activate my Shuffle anymore. But since my Mac doesn't recognize it anymore, I can't use the Software to reset the iPod. It's a vicious circle! Does anyone of you have an idea how I could fix it? It doesn't even show a sign of being powered by the US port (I tried them all), you know...

Found my 2nd generation iPod today and want to restore it to set it up from scratch - however the iTunes restore doesn't work so have tried using this app. Unfortunately it hasn't worked - the error message states: "The data partition could not be found and could not be formatted. Disconnect iPod, reconnect and then try resetting again." I've tried several times but no go :( Anyone else had this and then gone on to successfully restore?? Ta

Greatest present ever! My 1st gen 1GB iPod shuffle was believed to be dead for over 3 years, this little utility has brought it back to life! It's as if I just got an iPod for free. Thanks, thanks, thanks!

Still a no-go (does not show up at all) on a 512MB, 1G shuffle w/ 1.0.2. This remains disappointing beyond words. I'd give anything to have it simply SHOW UP as a device, on any OS.

I'd love to...if it would show up as a volume. Grr. To be frank, after an iTunes 7x update, the Shuffle simply went undetected going forward. This appears a common problem re: Apple Support Discussions.

Fantastic! My Shuffle died six months ago while I was updating its software and would no longer respond. Took it to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store, where several staffers couldn't get it to work and advised me to throw it away. But this application quickly fixed it, and now it's working perfectly. Many thanks, Apple!

Yes, thanks for un-breaking what was Apple's mistake to begin with. This is the reason I will not buy any iPod though I own much Apple gear.

According to the instructions it can take 3 minutes for it to recognise the iPod, and you may have to run it up to 3 times to make it stick.

Have you tried re-starting under OS 9 with the shuffle as just a USB device? Since the Apple Restore deletes all your music and restores it to "good as new", maybe that might help or at least it might get it to mount then you could restart under OS X and try to see if it will mount then. Not sure if this will work, but it's an idea (just).
