Scientific plotting package.

Overview

Veusz is a scientific plotting package, designed to create publication-ready Postscript or PDF output. It features an easy to use graphical interface as well as a command line interface and can be scripted or embedded in Python scripts. Graphs are constructed in a modular fashion from separate components. Datasets can be interactively modified or created from within the program.

Veusz provides a GUI, command line, and scripting interface (based on Python) to its plotting facilities. The plots are built using an object-based system to provide a consistent interface.

Features
  • X-Y plots (with errorbars)
  • Contour plots
  • Bar graphs
  • Images (with colour mappings)
  • Stepped plots (for histograms)
  • Line plots
  • Function plots
  • Fitting functions to data
  • Stacked plots and arrays of plots
  • Plot keys
  • Plot labels
  • LaTeX-like formatting for text
  • EPS output
  • Simple data importing
  • Scripting interface
  • Save/Load plots
  • Dataset manipulation
  • Embed Veusz within other programs

What's new in Veusz

Version 3.0.1:
  • Change in build system to use qmake to find Qt locations. This is to fix the build inside Anaconda. Also Qt and sip parameters can now be given as environment variables.
  • Fix problem when picking points with too many non-finite values
  • Change default SVG export DPI to 96 to match inkscape and provide option in dialog to choose export DPI
  • Allow %PAGE% and %PAGENAME% in export filename for single page output
  • Fix failing fitting due to iminuit differences
  • Fix crash if both ends of part of broken axis widget are the same for EMF exporting
  • Update to Qt 5.11.1 and update PyQt and sip in Windows binary
  • Build Mac and Linux binaries with EMF export

Its 2D capability surpasses that of SciDAVis. It's more mature interm of functionality, with only lacking feature being 3D support. Lots of graph editing details to make the graph look just the way you want it.

This is a damn fine app (v2.x); it makes beautiful plots and does an excellent job of handling the multitude of options for customizing a plot appearance. And now, v3.x adds 3D plots; this is an awesome addition! And I just wanted to get the butt-headed comment from 2014 off of the top of this list.

This app cannot read delimited text files. This glaring deficiency makes it useless, and worth its price.

Sorry, but you are wrong. You can import delimited text files with the CSV import tab. You can choose the delimiter (comma, space, tab, pipe, etc) there.

Looked promising but couldn't plot some ternary data I had. Spent a couple of hours getting nowhere, the tutorial instructions didn't match what was happening on screen and all my efforts to import, plot and generate useful results failed. The plot of my ternary data did not match the values in the spreadsheet/data table, so no go. Tried it, didn't provide me with required plot, have deleted it and now looking for alternative ternary data plotting app - and they appear to be very rare!

I'd be interested to get feedback over what was specifically broken or how the tutorial failed to match what was on the screen. I realise that the tutorial doesn't cover ternary plots in particular, but there is an example ternary plot included with the program. If you are using CSV data with some number in columns, it should be a matter of going to Data->Import, choosing CSV, clicking import. Then close the dialog, click on the ternary plot diagram, then choose your datasets to plot in the properties tab. We also have a mailing list here where you can get more help: http://home.gna.org/veusz/support/ Specific bugs can be filed here: https://github.com/jeremysanders/veusz/issues

From Features: "Binary data import added." This is huge. I can now use it! More later, but this looks like an exceptionally good approach to managing plotting, meaning that the program seems to have a way of getting the job done with the least amount of clicking around. It also includes some ability to examine data (zooming) and what I call "project management" where multiple data sets can be controlled within one document.
