Install iPodLinux on 4th gen iPods.

Overview

The 4G iPodLinux Installer installs iPodLinux onto your 4th generation iPod, iPod photo, and iPod mini with no hassle.

Warning: running iPodLinux on your iPod is completely unsupported by the iPodLinux team! Please be sure to read the included Read Me before running the installer.

From the developer of 4G iPodLinux Installer:

"There is a TON of information about iPodLinux, what it can and cannot do at the iPodLinux website: http://www.ipodlinux.org - I would highly recommend everyone who installs iPodLinux read through the site, or don't bother using the software, because it's very unsupported, very early in development, and very hackish :)"

What's new in 4G iPodLinux Installer

Version 0.4:
  • A Mac formatted iPod is now required to use this installer. If your iPod is Windows formatted, use the iPod Updater utility to reformat for Mac.

I'm assuming that this does not work for the 2g mini, right?

I have a new iPod Nano... i've tried everything... installing updates, and everything but the program won't work. Is the iPod Nano 1GB not supported, and if not is there another program?

installed latest version on a 20g 4th Gen primarily for the microphone recording capability. This worked once, which was very exciting, but always froze several times thereafter.instead of playing back. Seems to freeze for at least two hours. So Zero out of Ten.

Hello all, Linux works great on my ipod 4g non photo, Kudos to the developer. I have one issue though, my ipod will not mount any more, even when i revert back to the Apple firmware on the ipod. Any suggestions anyone?

The installer worked fine for me on my iPod Mini. I noticed only a couple of glitches: - on boot, I saw briefly a "happy Mac" type graphic flash on the screen, but it was slightly garbled (maybe a screen size difference?) - Rose Quartz Box will always crash after the first tone, requiring a reboot Otherwise, it looks good and it sounds good!

I loved this! It was easy to install and use, especially so for a 'hack', and it's easier to use than the regular OS. It has plenty of other apps easily installable, even Doom :D Definitely worth getting

Features: This thing has tons of features. I have it on my Mini. It comes with a good amount of games, somewhere around 10 or 15, I think. It has a modified version of Tetris, Chess, Tic Tac Toe, Tunnel, and tons of other amusing games. It also has some really cool extra downloads from other people, including idoom, which is a version of Doom one for the Ipod, which is pretty cool. (www.idoom.com) It also allows you to display pictures. They don't look GREAT on the mini, but hey, they're pictures. Ease of use:This is very easy to use. The only reason I give it a four is because I had a bit of trouble in the beginning. I installed it onto my mini. When I booted into Linux, it gave me a kernel panic. I decided to try to uninstall it then reinstall. However, it said that it wasn't installed at all. I did another install, and it worked fine. Other than that, it was easy to get up and running. Value: Free, duh. Stability: I've had a few problems with stability, but nothing major. If you ever get frozen, you can just boot back into either OS.

Beautiful. Installed and booted on a 4G standard non-photo non-mini model. I get occasional freezes in and around recording and playback but everything else is rock solid, even AAC playing.

I installed it on my 20GB 4G iPod and it went great. My songs display but when I try and play them the iPod locks up. I successfully recorded using "Mic Record" and my left earbud (I don't have any other mic!) I am happy with it but will be happier when it is bug free further down the development path. It is worth installing it just for the cool and wow factor for me!

Well... I installed it on a 2nd gen mini iPod. Installation went fine and it works 'fine'. It obviously has some bugs that makes it a bit hard to use, but we are talking about release 0.3 So, yeah... so far you wouldn't get a real benefits from using iPodLinux but it's always interesting to see in action; the development team did a good job. I bet that at the beta stage it will be much better!

"release 0.3" is referring to the installer. There is no official version number for the actual iPodLinux. Please don't associate the installer version with the version of iPodLinux running on your iPod -> no association at all :)
