Widget for BBC Ceefax service.

Overview

Ceefax (phonetic for "See Facts") is the BBC's teletext information service. Teletext is an information retrieval service provided by television broadcast companies. Teletext pages can be viewed on television sets with suitable decoders. They offer a range of text-based information, usually including national, international and sporting news, weather and TV schedules.

This widget will let you view Ceefax at any time using Dashboard. You do not need a TV but you will need Mac OS 10.4 or better and an Internet connection. Limited, unsupported functionality under Mac OS 10.3.9 requires Amnesty Widget Browser.

The link from MacUpdate no longer works. I've found that this excellent widget has a new home, here: http://www.gingerbeardman.com/ceefaxviewer/ The latest version works fine for me post-digital switchover, and now represents my only way of seeing original Teletext. And the original service is so much better than the pathetic new version provided with digital channels, which is lightweight and useless.

This is quite a nice widget but it suffers from the input problems that have plagued others. You seem to get about 2 levels of click with this widget, where afterwards it will simply stop responding to clicking on numbers for some reason. Either that or it only lets you click on numbers for the main news page and subsequent page. Occasionally when you launch the widget it just won't respond to clicks at all. And also I have just noticed with this new version that clicking the info button to spin the widget round then clicking done effectively renders the widget dead for that instance and it will no longer respond to any clicks at all (and the Ceefax logo gets messed up as well) This is an interesting and nice looking widget as I say, but it's either just not there yet or it is suffering from existing user input bugs in Dashboard (10.4.1) that are not the author's fault.

The input bug is not my fault as far as I know. I'd be interested to hear from other developers whose widgets also have similar problems. Or from users who have encountered such widgets. I have however included a workaround, in the form of the R key, which will refresh the widget (actually it reloads current screen) which for some reason fixes the input problem! More info when i have it.

Matt, good luck with that, it's really nice to see good old Ceefax again. I realised I wasn't actually commenting on the most recent version of your widget. I had downloaded it, but didn't realise at the time of writing it hadn't auto installed it as usually happens(Presumbably new widgets don't automatically overwrite older versions ?) However when I trashed the old one and installed your new one manually it ceased working altogether. When I click or drag the widget out it just doesn't load the contents anymore. Maybe it's a preference or cache problem my end. Anyway thanks for replying, and I will very much keep an eye out for future versions.

If these problems persist after a restart, please email me with OS details and we'll get to the bottom of it! Thanks.

Hi Matt. Yeah in the latest version 1.1 contents appears ok now, Done button is back as well. Great. Unfortunately the widget doesn't respond to clicks at all anymore. Other widgets work normally. I may be having some technical problems with this machine at the moment so my experience may not be representative. One humble suggestion is that instead of mouse input why not have it literally like Ceefax, in fact I think I have seen this done before where you key in the numbers yourself and have a kind of time out period where after 3 numbers it will reset the number you are trying to input. So basically one just keys in the number on their keypad and you don't even have to press enter. Just an idea anyway I'll give you an email as well

The J key already does what you suggest. Clicking not working is a Dashboard bug at the moment, some other widgets also suffer from it. Press the R key to fix that. Hopefully in future versions of Dashboard everything will just work.

The feed I use (not mine) comes in three image sizes, this is the best compromise of size/screen real estate.
