Evolvotron is an interactive "generative art" application for Linux to evolve images/textures/patterns/animations through an iterative process of random mutation and user-selection driven evolution. (This process is also often referred to as "evolutionary art" or "genetic art".) If you like lava lamps, and still think the Mandelbrot set is cool, this could be the software for you.

Basically the software shows a selection of algorithmically generated images. You pick one you like and the software mutates the algorithm to produce random variants. Simply repeat until bored, hopefully

For people who just want to run Evolvotron - you don't need to download the "full" Qt/Mac 3.3.4 (GPL edition) installer for MacOSX from http://naranja.umh.es/~atg
On the same page is a Qt/Mac 3.3.4 "minimal" installer (GPL edition) available (10Mb), which allows to run evolvotron or any other Qt3-based program provided on the ATG website. You can download it via:

http://naranja.umh.es/~atg/QtMac334_Mini.zip

sounded like fun... until I realized you need to install another piece of geeky framework thinggy which is a 60MB download and which seems to itself require XCode to be installed...

That's just a little too much work for a "lava lamp" kinda thing - I'll skip...

evolvotron needs an existing installation of Trolltech's Qt/Mac 3.3 C++ framework. Get a binary installer of Qt/Mac 3.3 at http://naranja.umh.es/~atg . The zipped download bookmark for this packages is installed into /Applications. *this is a bug, which will be fixed*
