EyeConnect1.7

30 October 2012

Stream EyeTV recordings, photos, music, movies to your TV or stereo.

Overview

EyeConnect software enables your UPnP AV digital media device to stream EyeTV recordings, digital photos, music and movies from your Mac onto your TV or stereo.

EyeConnect is based on the globally trusted Universal Plug and Play Audio/Video standard (UPnP AV) for the seamless sharing of digital content throughout your home. Using this industry standard technology, EyeConnect enables a broad range of UPnP AV devices to play EyeTV recordings, digital music, video, or photo content, including iPhotos, iTunes, and movies stored on your Mac. Elgato's EyeConnect digital media streaming software addresses a rapidly growing market for home networking solutions for the Mac.

Use EyeConnect in combination with your UPnP AV digital media device to manage wired or wireless streaming of digital entertainment content effortlessly. Digital media files remain organized as originally stored in your Mac libraries so you can quickly find the file you want.

EyeConnect has been tested intensively with the following UPnP AV devices: The D-Link DSM-320 MediaLounge, the Philips Streamium SL400i, and the Philips Streamium MX6000i. Since any UPnP AV compatible devices will be recognized by EyeConnect, field reports from users with other devices are especially welcome.

According to the release notes, this is still supported up to Mountain Lion, but when I run it on my Mountain Lion system and connect with my media playback devices, no content is available. I made sure the correct path is mapped. I am curious if support for EyeConnect is broken after a specific release of EyeTV. Is this the case? I have no problem reverting to an older version of EyeTV on my secondary computer.

Bought it some years ago. 2 updates since then. OS X got more updates in the same time. Never really worked, always shows errors while watching a streamed movie on the PS3. Some movies only play with extreme stuttering. TOO expensive, it's better to buy Media Link or load PS 3 Media Server for free.

EyeConnect installed itself with EyeTV. I have never used it. But I recently discovered that it launches a process on restart and just sits there using over 400MB of physical memory. God knows how many beachballs I've sat through because of it over the years. Absolutely obscene that Elgato produce this memory leaking rubbish and decide that every user wants to run it all day long. Here's how to permanently rid yourself of it: http://support.elgato.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=3924

The price tag is ridiculous. And it doesn’t even read Aperture libraries. The only good thing is the small memory footprint. Fortunately I discovered a competing product (from Yazsoft) that is able to read all my libraries, plus other features, at a fraction of the price.

It is a pitty cause EyeConnect pretends to be able to interface with iPhoto, but despite the support provided by Elgato, I never managed to have it working with my Media Tank nor with my Samsung C6000 TV ! Photos from iPhoto desperatly don't want to appear !

EyeConnect is a easy to use MediaCenter for OSX. It supports many diffrent devices like Sony's PS3. Unfortunatly PS3 support is not very stable at the moment. The only issue here is the price 49,95$ is way too expensive and absolutly not worth the software. If you're looking for a better MediaCenter then try MediaLink witch is only 20$. An an alternativ you can also try Twonky Media.

This is an Ok program, i like that it is a Pref Pane and not an application, this seems to keep it more accessible for the UPnP player to access (I seem to quit application based servers by accident). I also like that it can access all files on the Mac and not just those in the User folder, this is the main problem with the software that came with my device. Stability is good, no freezing issues when navigating or loading files. GUI on the TV is pretty plain (that's common), generic blue background no icons, shows a good number of lines. Navigation is quicker and more responsive than some other servers too. Bad Points - doesn't play FLACs and it is a tad expensive (€50). At that price I'll wait and see what happens with this program over the next 6-12 months, hopefully the developers will realise that there is an opportunity here to become THE UPnP server on the Mac if they do it right.
