Hmm, just tested with Adium and it seems to have problems working reliably with it for some reason. It seems if I change the audio output via `audioswitcher` (v.2.17 (40)) from Line Out to something else and then back to Line Out, it will work. Oh well, would be nice if it worked, but not too thrilled after testing it out as I had hoped it to be more reliable.

Airfoil is excellent for streaming any audio to any Airport device (for Airport Express and Apple TV, I know for sure). However, if you intend to watch a video, the functionality of the build-in Airfoil Video Player is disappointing.

The issue with the Airfoil Video Player is extreme CPU usage. As soon as you start watching any video the CPU usage is going to spike. After a couple of minutes your Mac's fans are running at max trying to prevent another Chernobyl meltdown. The build-in Web Video function's playback manage to use all my Mac's resources, yet the playback is not smooth and the player often crashes. The Web Video function also has a strange bug; scrolling on a webpage causes the speakers (you are streaming to) to make static crackles.

My best tip is to use VLC instead of the Airfoil Video Player – in the menubar when VLC is open select Window –> select Track Synchronization and set Soundtrack-synchronization to -2 sec for correct synchronized playback

Bonus tip: Airfoil is not compatible with 10.9 Mavericks yet, but most functions works if you disable the new App Nap function for Airfoil by right clicking on the Airfoil application -> select Get Info -> check 'Prevent App Nap'

The video synching is this app's Achilles heel.
Noticeably jerky video playback with DVDs on my Mac mini using the Airfoil Video Player, with a hint of picture degradation compared to VLC and DVD. After contacting support they concluded that my Mac mini's GPU was to blame. Using VLC with audio re-synched manually works perfectly, so I'm disinclined to agree.
In addition, there's no playlist option for the Video Player, which is a pain if you're watching a serial. There also doesn’t appear to be a way to sync the audio when playing videos back with iTunes. Perhaps a contextual menu to open in the Airfoil Video Player is a solution they should try? I believe this is a possibility.
All-in-all, using this to hear the audio from videos is a pain. Rogue Amoeba have clearly tried hard to simplify this aspect, but the end result falls short. But you should be aware of the shortcomings in this area before buying.

I tried several solutions to stream music from my mac to my audio system: via the build in streaming solution of my TV, WD TV Live and an Bluetooth Adapter. But there have always been some problems with not working firmware/software, bad connections, bad nearly unusable app GUIs (I look at you PlugPlayer), complicated usability of hardware/software. All of the above solutions just sucked.

Now I use Airfoil, and have my old iPhone 3G (I don't use it anymore) connected to the audio system. This is a killer solution. Just install Airfoil on your mac and your iPhone and you are ready to stream. No need for Airplay or Airfoil enabled hardware systems. You just connect your iPhone to what ever hardware you like.

Airfoil lets you stream to multiple targets. Plus, you can stream audio from one single app (rdio in my case), but still play the audio from all other apps and the system sounds on your mac.

I give Airfoil five stars, because it is the most practicable solution I can think of, it didn't fail a single time in several months, it looks great (even sends the album art from the rdio desktop app to the iPhone) and because I'm so very happy with it!

This software does exactly what it says it will do. I choose to stream music directly from my MacPro to my iPhone which is connected to a speaker system in my garage. I works perfectly by passing iCloud which require broadband data usage. I know I could use an Airport Express but this is cheaper and does the trick.

Set up is almost automatic.

Works as advertised with no extra bells.
But we now have the free Airplay. Making this obsolete?

Still 5 stars though

@Citizenvern: Not true. *Airplay* only works with iTunes. *Airfoil* works with every app on your mac! That's why Airfoil is not obsolete because of Airplay.

MountainLions Airplay can direct iTunes or ALL Audio to an Airplay speaker (AirportExpress/AppleTV), with Airfoil you can redirect the audio of a single Application. This comes handy if f.e. I want to listen to f.e. spotify on my stereo, but keep all other audio on my computer speakers (system audio, youtube videos a.s.o.). Also, there is a build in equalizer. So, there are still some things you can do with Airfoil which are not possible with MacOSX itself.

Overall it works well with a minor lagging, but on occasion I get a message to update Flash to 10.2.0 or higher otherwise the player wont play.
Well I have Flash Player version 11.4.402.265,
can't go much higher can I.
This is very annoying and I hope there will be a resolution to this bug soon rather the later.

This is brilliant software!

It is working very well with both 10.7.4 and
10.5.8 (with a legacy version) on a G4 MBP

This 25.00 app makes my... "fancy" Yamaha "AirPlay" receiver very reliable with Spotify.

Many thanks to the people that created this program.

Outstanding, reliable, well written, and easy to use application.

I started with the Windows version a few years back and am now using the Mac version. The team offered a very reasonable cross platform discount and with such an incredibly useful tool I was more than willing to support them.

Keep up the good work!

They need to fix this thing. The Instant On extra make every application made in Real Basic crash, every single one of them. I uninstalled Instant On and everything is back to normal.

It may be a side-effect: some apps crash that aren't made in Real Basic. 64-bit apps seem immune, perhaps because some haxies can't inject themselves into them (yet).

Do not install Instant Hijack alongside Ap ple's Security Update 2008-002 if you use ssh from the commandline. It will fail with a bus error.

Otherwise, great app.

Can anyone explain if this will work with UPnP/DLNA devices like a Philips MCW770??? I have a home wireless network router (Linksys) and would like to stream iTunes to the Philips MCW770. My G5 is physically connected by Ethernet to the router, but there are two PC's and one MacBook in my household that connect wirelessly.

This is not the right software for what you are doing. This software is specifically for the Airport Express. If you want something that streams iTunes to a UPnP device, try EyeConnect by El Gato:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17401

This should work well for you.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately EyeConnect doesn't seem to be able to connect with my Philips MCW770 in "PC Link mode".
