Wx 6.1 is an evolutionary release. The 5.x series was great, but it's interface didn't leave anymore room to grow. 6.x is going to surpass the 5.x series. The developer is VERY responsive to feature and bug updates. He is careful to release only fully tested products - or so it seems. No, I'm no relation or compensated reviewer..

I never explored Wx prior to version 6, so this is a review based on its existing feature set, not how it compares to previous versions.

At $9.99, Wx is the best weather app I've encountered for the Mac. The interface is clean and easy to use and the features are deeper than any other weather app for the Mac. It's responsive and comprehensive; the only real shortcoming being that it's limited the USA only.

I'd love to see a menu bar item (similar to the excellent & free WeatherDock) for when I just want a quick glance at conditions, but as long as WeatherDock keeps working its omission isn't a big loss.

In my honest opinion Wx 6 is a version 1 app. Compared to it's predecessor Wx 5.4.x, it's RADAR system is crippled.

The old Wx 5.4.x RADAR window allowed users to turn off the RIDGE view... which displays the land's topographic features. This view may be distracting to some. I prefer to look at the radar without the RIDGE view - since it makes seeing the county lines and cities easier during heavy radar events. Wx 6.x doesn't offer this.

Wx 5.4.x's RADAR window also *had* features such as the "9-Square box" which allowed users to quickly "jump" to neighboring RADAR zones. I used this 9-Square box frequently to keep track of approaching storms, as well as to continue monitoring the storm as it progressed past my default home RADAR zone. Wx 6.x doesn't offer this either.

The RADAR implication in Wx 6.x is garbage... it's a *MAJOR* down-grade from it's predecessor Wx 5.4.x.

Wx 5.4.x users who are accustomed to the EPIC RADAR window will now be extremely disappointed with Wx 6.x's RADAR offering.

Wx 6.x may be a "reinvented" (developer's word) version of Wx, but it's "reinvented" features are not what Wx 5.4.x users are accustomed to.

- A long time Wx user.

Sad to hear that this great program has removed features from an 'upgraded' version. That really sucks. I wanted to smiley up Emrys0821's review not down. :-(

I was going to get this app now that I have a Mac OS that it would work on, but I won't bother now that they have seen fit to cripple it. Sad.

Unfortunately the developer made it 10.6 and above, so I won't upgrade. At least now I kno I'm not missing anything.
Too bad, since version 5 is great and so is the developer. Hopefully it will improve.

Very disappointed. When I saw this for 10 bucks through the app store, I bought immediately. It works, albeit slowly. When I update manually the info stays the same. And the new GUI is horrible. Ugly.
The versions that were available before this were very pleasing to the eye, whereas this would make a Windows user proud. To the developers, go back to the old ways. Fix the update issue, and go back to the Mac style GUI.

I really like what I see in this app, but it's too expensive for me.
If it was included in a bundle or put as a daily discount, I'd buy in a minute.

More thorough that free weather applications, and not too expensive. Customer support is great.
I considered Home Weather Center and Seasonality. I went with Wx.
From what I recall, I did not like Home Weather Center's interface, and some features I wanted were planned for Seasonality 2 but were not present in the version I tried back then.

WX is the best weather application that I have ever used on the Macintosh. The developer is very responsive to questions or problems. For example, the latest Apple JAVA update 4 broke the radar animation of the application. I reported the problem and it was fixed the very next day (WX 5.35). I highly recommend this application and everyone should keep an eye on the weather!

Think about it: an international version of a weather application requires more than a few trivial language localizations. Different weather servers, often providing data in different formats from the American servers, would need to be accessed and interpreted by Wx. Furthermore, these weather servers typically aren't set 'n' forget affairs, they are constantly updating/changing the requirements for accessing data, as exemplified by the number of second-rate weather apps that work great for a while and then lose some or all of their features because their developers don't constantly maintain them. Thus adding international weather servers represents not a one-time investment of time and effort, but a sustained increase in the maintenance work on Wx.

I'm sure the developer can add to this regarding his priorities on Wx. My suspicion is that he's got a life outside of Wx, since he'd have to register an awful lot of users to make a decent living.

this app gets xml data from the united states government for free.
thats why there's no international version! if there's a free source of xml data for your country, you should inform the developer.

Craig, I've written to you several times, so you know I think that Wx kicks --- and is the last word in weather apps. HOWEVER, I'm still waiting for you to make the Wx Engine window either hidden by default or hidden by preferences. It's driving me crazy to have to routinely close it.

Please hear my pleas!

WX has really proven itself during our recent spell of severe weather here in Texas.

The NWS website is cumbersome to use and navigate.
WX's attractive uncluttered design, and the ability to track weather for selected destinations is superb.

The developer is responsive and has an excellent vision for what a weather app should be -- thanks
for the superb work, and reasonable price.

Mrglsmrc had trouble on 15 Dec 2009
INSTALLATION ISSUES..
dated august not december as mentioned here
does not run correctly-- has all kinds of applescript errors
must be forced quit in activity monitor or it will not close.
plist editor (prefernce options) will not close
many errors stem from having no initial location on first run
it claims it cannot update location editor because something was modified while running and gets locked out.

using macmini3,1 with osx 10.6.2 and latest java and 4gb ram

i was really looking forward to trying out WX especially because the software designer has a doctorate and seems to know what he wants to do.
for the moment i will have to stick to the us govt website that runs java for free.
but i am willing to pay for a premium experience.

let's hope that this problem was already fixed and that we are all downloading a previous flawed version. developer please get your latest version distributed.

best regards,
marc

I have to thank the developer, dr hunter, because he responded to me quickly. In fairness to him, the problem is specific to one user account on my macmini not all of them. so this is a rare problem and using the app is recommended. it is quite beautiful.
I still don't like the fact that I need to force-quit the app in activity monitor when trying it out with my main user account. but i am not sure that should be a concern for most users.
I myself will not purchase the app until my problem is resolved. I am quite optimistic that this will happen.
