Ambulant Player

2.2
15 July 2010

SMIL 2.1 playback engine.

Overview

Ambulant Player Open SMIL Player is an open-source media player with support for SMIL 2.1. The current AMBULANT release provides namespace-based support for the SMIL Language, Extended Mobile, Mobile, and Basic profiles. The current release also provides full backward compatibility with SMIL 2.0.

AMBULANT is intended for researchers and developers who want an source-code player upon which they can build higher-level systems solutions for authoring and content integration, or within which they can add new or extended support for networking and media transport components.

The AMBULANT player may also be used as a complete, multi-platform media player for applications that do not need support for closed, proprietary media formats. If you want to use AMBULANT as a media player, please keep in mind that licensing issues prevent us from providing support for RealMedia or WindowsMedia proprietary formats in this release of AMBULANT.

What's new in Ambulant Player

Version 2.2:
  • We now have a working plugin for at least one browser on each major platform. On Linux and Windows we have a Firefox plugin (that may also work in Google-Chrome, Opera, Safari and other browsers).
  • On Mac OS X we have a Safari plugin.
  • There is also an Internet Explorer plugin for Windows, but we are slightly less sure about the quality of this one.
  • Timing has improved a lot. This is most clear with video, where audio and video should now remain synchronized a lot better, but also between continuous media and the rest of the presentation.
  • For SMIL authors: there is a mechanism to select specific renderers for a media item. systemComponent allows you to test for availability of this renderer.
  • For developers, this change also means all renderers are now created with a factory function, and these all have the same signature.
  • Further, the element is now implemented for audio and video.
  • Currently, for audio media items additionally the element: must be added as a child of the audio media element.
  • For developers: the build process has been enhanced. We still rely on lots of third party libraries, but there is a script now that should download and build everything (for Linux and Mac OS X developers).
  • The configure process has also been rationalized.
  • For Windows developers there is a single .vsprops file where all external pathhnames are stored.
  • As usual, many bugs have been fixed too.
