Direct a stage-play in this lighthearted game.

Overview

The Witch`s Yarn is a critically acclaimed game designed around a player-directed stage play.

Pluck and spin the fools herein, You wry, long-haired Fates. Frayed ends this widow mends. Her tangled tale awaits!

A finalist at this year's Independent Game Festival, The Witch's Yarn was nominated for Innovation in Game Design. Its elegant control method is a milestone for interactive fiction. In the first minute, players are ably immersed in the story, regardless of their ability with computers.

Players become the director of a lighthearted stage-play. They select the actors who create scenes to advance the plot. Different actors create different scenes. So each choice is very important. With the rewind feature, the player can experiment with various actors to solve dramatic conflicts. By doing so, they'll explore many perspectives on this hilarious world of witches, retail, and family disfunction.

Presented as a theater script brought to life, beautiful illustrations and a terrific jazz soundtrack provide the richest of reading experiences. The fun grows as complications arise, which are handled by choosing the character best suited to resolve gradually more difficult challenges. By the end of the tale, an entangled Web of conflicted characters must be carefully navigated to bring the drama to a satisfying, whimsical, conclusion.

Its a delightful, interactive pastime for people who enjoy a leisurely read. Play the first two chapters for free!

After reading the previous review and the developers comment before that, I got even more curious and downloaded and tried this game. First thing: this is nothing for the ego shooter $500 graphics adapter card junkie who won't even look at a game if it doesn't run in 1024x768 at least. This is an adventure of the old sort, and even though that developer mentioned he worked for Sierra once, it has more touches from LucasArts (which is meant as a praise) - while you can still get game-over in this game, it's simple to "un-cue". That removes any fears of failing and invites to play around actually. And still it's more an interactive book than an adventure game, at least in the two first chapters I just finished (too bad its registering application only accepts credit cards - no I'll have to go back to a real book for the weekend) - but for people who like to read a good book, that's just fine!

Boring, unimaginative, poorly drawn. Had the worst five minutes of my life downloading and testing this piece of retro garbage.

As one of Mousechief's developers, I'd like to explain a few things mentioned so far. First, I don't know who at MacUpdate decided this was an RPG. It's not. It is supposed to be more like a Sierra classic. I used to work for them. However, the target audience is for casual gamers who've never seen an adventure game, only puzzle games and simple action games. Therefore, The Witch's Yarn ramps up its challenges pretty slowly. In chapter 3 players begin to face logical dilemmas based upon the story, and they get harder along the way. But we tried hard to invent challenges that wouldn't frustrate a player. So experienced gamers will find the puzzle aspect of the game weaker than the story aspect. What a hard-core gamer might find truly challenging is discovering all the strange endings and easter-eggs inside The Witch's Yarn's vast maze of a story. have fun, Keith

Ah, this brings me back to the old Sierra games that I've collected and solved through the years :) Though I'm not quite sure if I like this one yet. The art is VERY nice and the game and story seem very well put together. Warm up your clicking finger and get ready to read though, because there's a lot of both in this game. It actually feels more like "directing a show" rather than playing a game, but I haven't spent a lot of time with it yet. Hopefully it'll pick up after I get into it more. It's different, that's for sure and any adventure game enthusiast will enjoy it. But don't worry, the built in intro/tutorial will get you used to how things work right away without feeling too 'wizardy' (pun intended?).
