Strong encryption app.

Overview

iSecret helps you to keep all your passwords, PINs and other stuff not everyone should see. It does this by keeping data in DES encrypted format. There is no way to decrypt the data without knowing the pass phrase which was used to create the encryption key. Beware - this also means that if you loose or forget your pass phrase, then nobody - including the writer of this program - will be able to retrieve your data!

Finally! It took years - and this great little application - to get myself organised with regard to my messy password/PIN-situation. For the first time I can now live without the ever-lingering slight scare of forgetting or loosing my various passwords in my personal and private life! Now I only need to remember ONE single password - and of course access to my trusted iBook and iMac - to get to all my passwords, PIN's, or any other data that I need to know but others must not have access to. iSecret is super-simple to use: after istallation it asks you to key in what could be considered the one last password you'll need in your life. This password will safely protect all other passwords you will enter in iSecret. The iSecret will give you the possibility to create categories into which you may want to divide up your passwords, and then you just key them in ...... it's really as simple as that. iSecret als features a handy import/export facility which helps to transfer its content to another Mac. Your data is protected in your Mac so safely (in kind of a CDMA-way, I understand) that it is completely impossible to retrieve them if the iSecret password is not available. Of course, this implies that if you forget that one password ......... then everything in iSecret is lost irretrievably. Nobody, not you, not any hacker, not even the guy who has written iSecret can get to the info. In summary: this is one great, imminently useably, practical tool ....... it reduces the need to memorise passwords to having to remember only a single one. You just better find a spot in your brain where you can look up the latter!

The "reviews" by Mr. Zwicker and his buddy sound a lot like they are friends of the developer. I'm not really sure what the point of an app like this is, as Apple's own Keychain pretty much does the same thing, and it's integrated into the system, so you don't need to manually add and update your login data. Also, I think it's a bit suspicious to claim that because of using DES, there would be "absolutely no way" of retrieving the data without the passphrase. It is known that no encryption technology is perfectly secure, and as my fore-poster already stated, there have been more or less successful attacks on DES already.

Personally, this would be a lot more secure and useful if it didn't use DES. There is no documentation on which form of DES it uses, and 1-round DES has been found to be feasible to crack, hence the introduction of Triple DES awhile back. I think AES would be a much better encryption choice for apps like this, just as easy to encode, although much safer from various attacks (currently).
