RandomWeb ScreenSaver

1.3.3
03 August 2006

Screensaver randomly searches the net for photos.

Overview

The RandomWeb screensaver searches the Internet for digital photos based on popular digital camera filename formats. It can also search using keywords, a Web site, location, or current iTunes artist. The images display uses OpenGL (3D hardware accelerated) zooming and fading.

Some of the features are:

  • Search for digital camera photos
  • Search using keywords
  • Search a Web site
  • Search a Web page
  • Automatically search using the current iTunes artist
  • Content filter (safe search), so it can be used in public environments. (This can be disabled in the Settings tab)
  • Images can be automatically expired
  • Image library can be limited to a certain size (old images are removed to make space for new ones)
  • Limit search to images of a minimum size
  • Images are stored in your user directory under Pictures/RandomWeb, so you can browse them later
  • Status bar shows you its searching progress
  • Override connection timeouts, to get better responsiveness
  • Can display the filename with the image

What's new in RandomWeb ScreenSaver

Version 1.3.3 is now OpenGL and a Universal Binary.

Seemed to install fine. I can go to the pref pane and select it, customize it, but when I try to start the screen saver it acts as if it is loading for a couple seconds and then just goes back to the desktop. Nothing ever happens. Help. Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 3.5 GB Memory Mac OSX 10.4.6

This is an amazing thing if you have broadband. I use it in conjunction with BackLight to continually change the desktop as I work. I find that putting names of cities around the world in it, along with National Geographic's website, NASA, etc, produces an endlessly fascinating - if occasionally irrelevant - streat of images flowing past. Tropical beaches works, too, if you like that sort of scenery... Great app!!!!

This is very nice and produces interesting results. It would be nice to also add Flickr support. - For The H*ll of It

One of the coolest things you can do with your Mac's idle time (aside from SETI@home). Seriously, give this a try. It's addicting.

This is a really cool application, but I have been playing with it for about and hour and I can't get it to grab hardcore pornography.

The default setting has Safe search enabled. To turn off this unrighteous censorship, look in the Settings tab.

quite nice saver. i've been using it for the past week with no problems. it's as interesting as the search terms you can come up with; too many screensavers are just canned repetitive graphics, this one actually rewards creativity.

I installed randomweb as instructed. First, it wouldn't work -- no pictures displayed, just a black screen. I removed it. But now ever since installing it, my computer continually locks up -- ie, the gray curtain comes down, with the message in a bunch of different languages that I must restart. This started immediately after installing randomweb, and I haven't downloaded or installed anything since, so I'm pretty sure it's the problem. Based on my experience, I would be extremly cautious about installing this program.

Wow. I hope that wasn't my fault. :( I'm not sure how I could have corrupted anything. The only files that get written out are images in your local Pictures directory. It is true, that the screensaver doesn't work on older macs (without quartz extreme) but those users just get a white screen instead of pictures (i.e. nothing absolutely tragic happens). Can you tell me more information? What kind of computer are you running and what version OS?

Have you tried repairing your permissions with Disk Utility? It may have just been a fluke that you installed this software and then your disk permissions got messed up at the same time, causing the lock-ups.

I would have to echo the remarks here. Absolutely compelling. I had to up my monitor sleep time to 30 minutes simply because I enjoy this so much. One nice thing is the abilty to grab from specific sites. All in all simply wonderful!

A strangely compelling application for a reason I have difficulty pinning down; it feels odd looking anonymously into other peoples' lives, even though the photographs grabbed are publicly available! Presentation is superb - the pans, scrolls and fades between one image and the next are very nicely implemented. This sort of thing has been done before, but never so well in my experience. Only one problemette in my experience; the list of excluded sites (from which uninteresting pictures can be stopped from downloading) doesn't persist across sessions (10.3.8).
