Research tool for the web.

Overview

Dowser is a research tool for the web. It clusters results from major search engines, associates words that appear in previous searches, and keeps a local cache of all the results you click on in a searchable database. It helps you keep track of what you find on the web.

Future versions will have 'shallow' crawling of websites that you click and a peer-to-peer component.

Be very careful with this app. It is actually a faceless application that launches a daemon for port 5309 Basically, it's your very own search tracking service. However, with no mac-like (or for that matter, common sense) admin controls, you can't turn it off without using the terminal or activity monitor... So that alone has it suck, and it should be deemed beta ware. Nevertheless, the idea is noble and it would be interesting if there were more to do than just track your past searches. I'm sure there is more actually, but I don't look at my past searches until I've search about 50 things. I don't know, maybe I'm not the right audience for this kind of "software". Regarding stability - again - it uses python, so you would think everything should be ship-shape. However, there is no error message when nothing happens after clicking a link or you're presented with a blank page... I'd say, relying on a browser was the first fault in this software's design. Anywayz, it doesn't always seem to work and it is a lot of trouble to get back to the dang thing if you happen to browse the results you're presented. (Who remembers to go to "http://127.0.0.1:5309" when they want to use a specific application?? Take your chances.

You might also try a browser-based solution: vivisimo.com.
