Bummer, just plain unfriendly app to install, interface is outdated, .. .
Ignore this expensive converter. There are tons of free alternatives that actually are working.

Our two companies have been using Sound Grinder from Monkey Tools for three years. Sound Grinder has produced outstanding results for us. The SG interface is very clean, intuitive and easy to use yet provides a high level of control over the sound, components and format of final product. Sound Grinder features and performance compare favorably with several professional studio applications costing many times more. The learning curve is quick and results are immediate out of the box. Monkey Tools provides prompt, reliable and informed support for its product. We use 12 software applications for mastering music albums and the assistance we received from Monkey Tools is better than our experience with any other software company that we have dealt with. We enthusiastically recommend Monkey Tools and Sound Grinder to anyone in the business of making music. Do yourself a favor and try this product. You will not be disappointed.

Oh dear,

For FREE, you can get XLD-(X Lossless Decoder) which will in and of itself convert(with no intermediary files) all sorts of sound formats.

It's the best option we have on the Mac right now.

Go get it.

Still not a UB application. I contacted the developer of this application well over 9 months ago and as recently as within the past 2 months. Both times they assured me that the UB version was right around the corner. Now we have 2.5.7 and still no UB version.

Installing LAME separately is a pain. Other apps bundle it quite happily - why can't Sound Grinder?

(And could we have an option to select --alt-preset-standard and --alt-preset-extreme, please? All my other MP3s are ripped at --alt-preset-extreme, and it would be nice to have the same for Sound Grinder-generated files as well...)

Actually, as a follow up to that comment: my files all seem to end up as CBR even though I've got "Variable" selected. So that makes the whole thing not a lot of use to me :(

Does anybody know what might be going wrong?

Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately the LAME mp3 codec cannot be included in the Sound Grinder installer due to legal restrictions for commercial software. We would desire greatly to have this included, but it is not possible at this time.

Also, we welcome greatly any information you can provide about the issue with CBR and VBR formats as we cannot duplicate the issue, but would like more information. Please contact support@monkey-tools.com and we will assist you promptly.

Thank you,

The installer stupidly requires a password. No, I don't want to grant system access to an application installer when drag & drop works fine for everything else! I manually pulled the app out of the installer package, it runs fine.

Functionally, the program is great, but the interface doesn't feel natural at all. It's much too cluttered and non-standard.

It would be nice if it could simply tie-in to iTunes for MP3 conversion. As it is i just converted my OGG files to AIFF, then converted them to MP3 in iTunes.

We greatly value your comments, and will consider them in future revisions.

Also, we currently provide the installer and require admin access in order to install the Contextual Menu Plugin that supports Rapid Convert. Rapid Convert provides a quick and powerful way to process your assets. You can read more about this in the installed users guide.

Please note, that the application references its location in the application folder for further features, and it is our recommendation that you run the installer to ensure proper operation of Sound Grinder.

Best Regards,

Monkey Tools

Its rubbish...or at least the demo is. It refuses to convert AMR files to anything playable in iTunes. Either they are lying about allowing full functionality in the demo or it does not do what its suppose to do. Thanks for a wasted afternoon.

Thank you for your post. However, we are not aware of iTunes ability to accomodate AMR files in any situation on OSX. We researched this further with no success. We welcome any feedback as those who use our tools and the AMR format do not communicate anything that leads us to beleive that we do not create AMR files incorrectly.

I put off buying SG for awhile since it did duplicate the basic features of some of my normal tools. Two things changed that, convert while maintaining folder structure (useful for Audio Ease Altiverb users) and Rapid convert which I now would not want to live without. Add to this the new variable normalize and this app has become indispensable to me. I use it everyday with hundreds of files and have had no problems, all smooth operations here (OS 103.7 and 8). When the Rapid Convert contextual menu plug-in first became available it did not work on my particular system. This gave me the occasion to experience their support which was 15 out of 10! Timely responses, detailed information and superb follow up. My every question since has been met with this same level of quality and attention. I am always happy to find both a must-have app AND a developer who understands the importance of customer support and strives to provide it with complete dedication. I am very happy with my purchase.
