Audio conversion utility, many formats supported.

Overview

Sound Grinder is an audio conversion utility providing comprehensive features and built to process files in a fast, efficient and rock solid manner. In addition to Universal Binary support, running 100% native on both PPC and Intel microprocessors, version 3.x includes several new features including: "Droplets" for simple drag and drop conversion, support for Quicktime Components such as Flip4Mac Windows Media component, enhanced metadata editing, and more.

Sound Grinder now includes a new workflow option called Droplets, which provides a simpler way of converting audio files. Choose your conversion settings, and save the Droplet to any location. When you drag any file(s)/folder(s) to the saved Droplet icon, Sound Grinder will process those files instantly using your specified settings. This provides users an effective way to create valuable workflows for current projects, or recall settings from past projects.

Sound Grinder 3.x also provides support for additional types of metadata for additional types of files, including reading and writing the full suite of ID3 tags in AIFF, WAVE and MP3 files. Sound Grinder features conversion support for the most popular audio formats including: Sound Designer 2, WAV/BWAV, AU, AIFF, OGG/Vorbis, MP3 (LAME codec), Quicktime and others. Users can convert files right within the OS X Finder by using Rapid Convert, our contextual menu and OS X Dock conversion tool. Other features include support for pull-up/pull-down sample rates, folder hierarchy recreation, and 31 character naming compatibility.

  • Universal Binary for 100% native Intel and PowerPC support.
  • Sophisticated processing engine for speed and stability.
  • Droplets, providing quick drag-n-drop access to file conversion.
  • Customizable list view.
  • Multiple error logging levels.

Our two companies have been using Sound Grinder from Monkey Tools for three years. Sound Grinder has produced outstanding results for us. The SG interface is very clean, intuitive and easy to use yet provides a high level of control over the sound, components and format of final product. Sound Grinder features and performance compare favorably with several professional studio applications costing many times more. The learning curve is quick and results are immediate out of the box. Monkey Tools provides prompt, reliable and informed support for its product. We use 12 software applications for mastering music albums and the assistance we received from Monkey Tools is better than our experience with any other software company that we have dealt with. We enthusiastically recommend Monkey Tools and Sound Grinder to anyone in the business of making music. Do yourself a favor and try this product. You will not be disappointed. - The Madison Group - Mindworm Records

Bummer, just plain unfriendly app to install, interface is outdated, .. . Ignore this expensive converter. There are tons of free alternatives that actually are working.

Oh dear, For FREE, you can get XLD-(X Lossless Decoder) which will in and of itself convert(with no intermediary files) all sorts of sound formats. It's the best option we have on the Mac right now. Go get it.

Still not a UB application. I contacted the developer of this application well over 9 months ago and as recently as within the past 2 months. Both times they assured me that the UB version was right around the corner. Now we have 2.5.7 and still no UB version.

Installing LAME separately is a pain. Other apps bundle it quite happily - why can't Sound Grinder? (And could we have an option to select --alt-preset-standard and --alt-preset-extreme, please? All my other MP3s are ripped at --alt-preset-extreme, and it would be nice to have the same for Sound Grinder-generated files as well...)

The installer stupidly requires a password. No, I don't want to grant system access to an application installer when drag & drop works fine for everything else! I manually pulled the app out of the installer package, it runs fine. Functionally, the program is great, but the interface doesn't feel natural at all. It's much too cluttered and non-standard. It would be nice if it could simply tie-in to iTunes for MP3 conversion. As it is i just converted my OGG files to AIFF, then converted them to MP3 in iTunes.

Its rubbish...or at least the demo is. It refuses to convert AMR files to anything playable in iTunes. Either they are lying about allowing full functionality in the demo or it does not do what its suppose to do. Thanks for a wasted afternoon.

I put off buying SG for awhile since it did duplicate the basic features of some of my normal tools. Two things changed that, convert while maintaining folder structure (useful for Audio Ease Altiverb users) and Rapid convert which I now would not want to live without. Add to this the new variable normalize and this app has become indispensable to me. I use it everyday with hundreds of files and have had no problems, all smooth operations here (OS 103.7 and 8). When the Rapid Convert contextual menu plug-in first became available it did not work on my particular system. This gave me the occasion to experience their support which was 15 out of 10! Timely responses, detailed information and superb follow up. My every question since has been met with this same level of quality and attention. I am always happy to find both a must-have app AND a developer who understands the importance of customer support and strives to provide it with complete dedication. I am very happy with my purchase.

Man, shareware like this makes me pine for the days when SoundApp was still maintained. It was much more versatile, and free... ...I can't find a current homepage anymore. )-:

I agree about the price being way too high, especially since the QuickTime 6.3 requirement makes it completely obvious that this app does nothing on its own but uses QT behind the scenes to do all the conversion. Shoot... I could write this app in AppleScript studio. No one should be paying $40 for this. But on the other hand where are you getting this "most Mac users are between 15 & 25" rubbish from? Like 60% of all the Mac users I know are over 25. How many 15 year old kids do you know that can afford a Mac without their parents also being Mac users? Maybe a few but not oo many.

You folks gotta keep in mind that most Mac users are between 15 and 25. And they simply can't afford software at these prices. Not for what YOU'RE offering with this app.
