Personal Antispam X6 for Mac10.6.12

23 July 2012

Spam filter for Mail, Entourage, Outlook, and more.

What is Personal Antispam X6 for Mac

Personal Antispam is now bundled with Internet Security Barrier.

Personal Antispam works in conjunction with Apple Mail and Microsoft Entourage to filter spam so users can keep their inboxes spam-free. It is the first intelligent program for fighting spam and phishing e-mails. Intego Personal Antispam X5 learns from the e-mail users receive, and regular monthly updates to the program help keep their inbox as spam-free as possible. The program filters spam and phishing e-mails, protecting users from spam glut and scams. Features include:

  • Filters e-mail and weeds out spam, placing it in a Spam folder
  • Filters spam with Bayesian analysis
  • Filters spam by address, message content, layout and more
  • Filters spam with a whitelist of users' contacts
  • Filters spam by developing a blacklist of spammers' addresses
  • Filters spam by top-level domain; users can exclude specific domains, such as .ru, .cn, .biz and more
  • Filters messages with incorrect encoding and identifiers
  • Filters phishing e-mails
  • Filters attachments for common file names
  • Trusts contacts in user's Address Book
  • Trusts ISP's spam headers
  • Learns from the spam users receive
  • Learns from legitimate e-mails
  • Does not slow down e-mail programs
  • Regular updates help fight spam as new types appear

From Intego's support site: Personal Antispam Discontinued Justin posted this on Jun 25 13:46 After careful consideration, a difficult decision has been made to discontinue support for Personal Antispam. This means that future filter updates will no longer be available. The last software update for Personal Antispam (10.6.12) will soon be released, providing compatibility for Mac OS X 10.7.4 (Lion). This update will also allow Personal Antispam to continue functioning past the subscription expiration date. Any future updates to Mac OS X may render Personal Antispam incompatible, and it will not be updated or supported for future Mac OS X software releases. If you have any additional questions or concerns, you may still contact our Support Team by clicking here. https://intego.zendesk.com/entries/21639926-personal-antispam-discontinued

I don't quite understand why v10.5.7 has come floating to the top at this time when I for one have already been using 10.6.x for some considerable time. Surely, this version isn't in development anymore now that Intego have their, ehrm, you-beaut Internet Security Barrier X6 product on the market? As a matter of fact, the installer which I downloaded just out of interest from the link at the top of this page renders v10.5.1. Time to do some manual modding, MacUpdate.

My previous review I still stand by, but X5 gets ZERO stars. I think paying $34.95 fee to upgrade for a $49.95 full is out right ridiculous. X4 does not work with Office 2008 so I PA is now gone from my Mac.

This product is far to expensive and brings almost nothing new to Mail... Use the cheaper Purify in stead! You will get rid of all your spam and also report abuse (spam) in one click, this feature brought down my spam level from over 70 a day to less than two a day... It's unbelievable but true !

I've been using Antispam for a few months now and overall have been quite happy with it. Certain emails it still considers spam even tho i've said they are not and of course vice versa, but it is such a low number and easy to fix that it i don't mind. The NetUpdate part that came with Antispam is a piece of junk. It keeps telling me that the same update is available, but has to reboot my Mac first then it supposedly installs the update and must reboot again. If i want i can do this all day/week/year ... not cool/funny. Now SpamSieve gave me some problems a couple years back and i made the mistake of stating that on VT so the developer criticized me on their website ... Not cool! I have been working in corp IT dev for over 20yrs and the first thing you learn is that criticism is to be expected and to your benefit ... we are not gods.

SpamSieve is near enough 100% accurate; it appears to be bullet-proof; updates appear to be free; in three years I've had two queries which have been answered within hours. 2¢.

I am finding that it seems to need at least a month of training - which I am in at the moment on trail - as it doesn't seem much different to Mail's own junk features. But, the master interface is great and gives you a great view of your email types!

Intego stuff is a bit on the pricey side of things, but they deliver excellent software. Virusbarrier is personal fave. There's not much happening here on the Mac, viruswise, but I do care about my PC based clients. Netbarrier was and still is exceptional, though it looks like the Little Snitch and Leopard's new Firewall approach are dictating new directions. Been playing a bit with Personal Antispam now, and it has a good start here. Can't figure out if this beats the 'for 7 dollar a month we'll take care of your spam' but in less than 4 month I'll probably know.

It would be nice to filter out SPAM in Apple Mail. But with the release of OS X Leopard perhaps Apple Mail will be a stronger App for fighting SPAM. Does anyone have any comments regarding the New Apple Mail?

In reading through the Getting Started manual for this, it shows a screenshot on page 29 which says "Personal Antispam filters: This subscription will expire in 30 days--Protect your Mac from the latest spam and phishing techniques." So they make you PAY for updated filters? SpamSieve doesn't do that. I don't care how pretty it is, that doesn't justify the ongoing expense. No thanks.

Apple's Mail app does a great job of spam filtering versus what I see Outlook do on PC's at work, but given that spam shows no signs of drying up, a $25 investment is a small one given the payback in time NOT wasted in the coming years. Being able to use other mail apps like Entourage or others sure to rise up is also no small benefit.

Having used SpamSieve for ages and Antispam for almost as long, I have to say that Antispam is *way* more effective and accurate in my particular situation. SpamSieve on its own might have given me around 85% accuracy, but this app is hogging 99%. Still, having said all that, I use both - just to be on the even safer side. ;)

I've been using this program for years, and it's very efficient. It doesn't use much CPU or RAM, and the background process is only active when mail's coming in. You train the program as you receive new spam or as false positives are detected, so, over time, it gets even better. It keeps almost all spam out of my inbox.

I have used it for some time on one my Macs, but, to be honest, I have not found it to be very convincing. It does the work to some extent, but not much better than Mail's own antispam. There are other, more efficient solutions for blocking spam.

Same feedback here: I downloaded and tried the demo, you have to do a lot manually first and have to keep the app awake and working... After some training lessons what's good and bad mail, the efforts are as good as the built-in spam filter(s).... BUT - really nice interface, this is one of the best-looking spam-interfaces I've seen so far...! ;-)

Intego is a horrible company, their support sucks and if it wasn’t for NetBarrier they would having nothing at all. They want exorbitant amounts of money to keep the useless filter subscription up to date. Oh, and did I mention there support. I own all their apps and have for years. Hell will freeze over before I buy another from them.

Another vote for Spam Sieve as a tried and true competitor. As for why not use Mail's built-in Bayesian filtering: first, that doesn't work with Entourage which some are required to use for corporate mail, but more importantly SpamSieve is significantly better at catching spam without false positives. Still, Mail is probably good enough... In any case, I can't see this application doing a better job than SpamSieve, even with regular updates, primarily becuse SS is sitting at approximately 100% accurate for me right now. It also seems like you'd need a rather lengthy trial before deciding it was working.

Judging from the screenshots on Intego's site, and having had no experience with SpamSieve, I'm guessing one feature this program offers is a nice GUI. I suppose that's worth 25 bucks (or even 50) to someone but it would be a hard sell for me.

Not only is this piece of crap worse than Apple's Mail Junk filter, it takes (at least for me) 2 hours to remove it. It drops files all over your system. After running it for 3 weeks, this thing allowed junk mail in that itself caught in the first few days. It is crap. Avoid it!

BORG wrote: > Mail and Entourage already use whitelist /algorithms to fight spam. > WHY do we need this? It seems that my previous answer has been removed, though it was not off topic and not offending. Just ironical. The meaning of my answer was: There is not only one car manufacturer, but nobody asks WHY we do need more than two. I looks like someone did not understand that my answer was that in my opinion, the comment posted by BORG is value less. Let me give one possible technical answer concerning Entourage: Maybe is it because Entourage is not able to LEARN ? If you choose "Put to spam" in Entourage, and if you receive the same spam a second time, then it will not be recognized. I don't know if the new Antispam from Intego is better than the one of Apple. An answer to BORG'S question would be given if one would proceed with a complete test. Or is the antispam from Mail.app perfect ? BORG could also ask: Apple does allready offer Mail.app for free. WHY should someone pay for another mail client ?

I already use the free JunkMatcher with Apple Mail and it works beyond compare. If that wasn't enough, I could use SpamFire for $30. Intego, $60 is a bit stiff when so many apps already do it for free or less expensively.
