Drag and drop disk image creation.

Overview

FreeDMG is one of the most powerful and easy to use disk imaging program available for Mac OS X. With this software it is possible to quickly perform disk imaging on the fly. Both the program's window, and the dock icon can be used for drag-and-drop imaging. There many image formats that that can be chosen (UDZO, UDCO, etc.). FreeDMG can make Internet enabled disk images for distribution to Macs as well as ISO/Joliet hybrid images for cross-platform delivery. Verbose preferences, and a built-in log window help users hide/display additional information about the imaging process.

Gain easy access to the many options available for creating and manipulating disk images in Mac OS X with FreeDMG. From the hidden "resize" function of hdiutil to the adjustable compresion levels available for the UDZO format, this software attempts to unveil it all. Users have the option to overwrite exising files, and can choose to quit the program automatically after creating an image on launch. It is possible to encrypt images (password protect) with the click of a button.

With FreeDMG you can attach beautiful html/rtf software license agreements to disk images. This software is currently the best way to add SLAs to disk images for multi-lingual distribution. The license creation process in FreeDMG prevents character loss for all 2-byte languages.

What's new in FreeDMG

Hi, this application is really great, so simple to use and it works very, very fine with my SL 10.6.8. I have tried others, but this one is for me the top. And it gives many options, everything works without any problems. Many thanks to the developer who offers this wonder even for free ! It saves so much time in my work, and i can do now actions who made me afraid in the past with other apps. I am really very happy that i found this app. by chance. Thank you extremely ! Excuse me my poorly english, i am a eldery french Mac friend. Regards, F Rol, (france)

I can't use this, as it does the oddest thing... Anytime I enter a text box, and click a key, the application loses the ability to track keyboard or mouse events, and will no longer respond to any type of system calls (sorry no quitting, even from the dock). The only exit is by pulling up the Force Quit dialog. Thankfully opt-tabbing still worked, as does clicking on the background. Or I would have had to force a reset. Very, very odd.

Really does create a dmg file easily. The only thing really missing is the ability to include a background image for the dmg window and hide the image file on the dmg.

Yeah, so this program works good. :D The preferences are fairly advanced it seems. Still a little buggy. I would be willing to pay $5.00 to $10.00 for this application. Thanks for the ease of read-only volume creation. :) I use the create from volume function a lot to back up my CDs!

There was a small bug in the initial release of FreeDMG 0.5.2b. The issue has been corrected (via silent update). The software will no longer crash on launch. Thanks to everyone for their promt and informative feedback! Eddie Kelley www.kelleycomputing.net

Today I upgraded my PB 15" to 10.4.2 and then downloaded FreeDMG (for the first time, to try it). But I cannot even open it - it crashes immediately... Probably something to do with the OS X 10.4.2 updated components...

April 11th 2005 - I just used this newer version and like it alot. It preforms like v0.4.5 but the PASSWORD PROTECTION feature is especially nice! I had no problems with this newer release (v0.5.1b) and I'm using a G4 Digital Audio Mac, running OS-10.3.6, 1GHz Sonnet Processor with 1GB of RAM.

Something disastrous has happened to FreeDMG in this new version. The last one (4.5) worked fine for me on a G5 under 10.2.8. The new one, on the other hand, just grinds away (on only a 10 meg folder) without doing anything. It appears to start mkdmg without going any further. Reinstalled the old version, and it worked fine again.....

Very nice little app - appears more robust and quicker than Dimage which I was using. Also more features in prefs, though I would like to know more about compression types and what internet enabled means. Like the "image on the fly". Put this thing in your panther finder window toolbar and its just about as easy to access as the zip archiver from the contextual menu.

Would love to try this out, but when I try making a DMG with it, all I get is an error dialog. The logs don't show anything other than the mkdmg command-line help (as if the app is not passing the right parameters).

This application works well, and has functional preferences. I use 10.3.5 (localized in French) on a 1.33 GHz 15-inch PowerBook (with a ComboDrive). Simple and Good.
