I wouldn't trust a proprietary crypto software which votes itself up on pages of important software like Tor Browser Bundle, GPG Suite and TrueCrypt.

The software itself is pretty useless. Most of it's operations can be done in the Terminal for free or with other free OpenSource solutions.

I regret I bought this to try it out. Don't fall for it.

Don't have regrets as you can obtain a refund from Apple. The only regret you should have is giving two times 5 stars in the same day to GPG, and promote "free OpenSource solution"s to obtain more donations...Tschigg,Monkeyjunkey,Nevt (Sp Am), is just the same story... 1/2 stars for MAS, 5/5 stars for FREE. Objectivity...

MAS only, closed source. I have the feeling the developer has been cluttering the TrueCrypt Listing with Cryptext & Cryptix. Both apps come from him. Both apps have 20 recommendations on the TrueCrypt listing as of 2013-07-26.

Half star for this.

Having just briefly read some of your reviews MonkeyJunkey, it seems to be a habit of yours to give low ratings/reviews/stars when you haven't even tried the app as in the MAS complaint 1/2 star ratings and when you think the developer has been creating accounts to shill his own work. Just a couple examples.

Voice your opinion but do it as a comment which doesn't hurt/help the apps overall rating. Then again, you can do whatever you like but it helps keep MU accurate imo... Cheers!

Nice to see the dev has a good attitude, pre-cryptix owners should receive promo codes to the MAS version... just a thought.

If what I described in my comment from 2013-07-25 is true - and it seems like it is - then half a star is appropriate.

Fishscale: Also, that's another reason MAS only apps indeed deserve a bad rating because if there is no way to try, how are you gonna tell the fantastic apps from the scam apps?

Rbcafe: From your description I can't even tell what Cryptix actually does. "Study cryptography" - ok, what function is that? Is it educational software? If actual text encryption is happening, GPGServices would cover that. And opposed to Cryptix that is free and open source software. So imo, it is a great recommendation.

Especially when it comes to encryption, I think that closed source isn't ideal. How are people going to check the code for errors and potential backdoors etc pp?

i guess it's just result of having cluttered all cryptographic listings for years with GPG...That's what you obtain from your lack of objectivity and tolerance. We are not all Open Source. Keeping counts and dates like a fishmonger is interesting...

I'd like to like this, I really would. But

1 - the Dev's web site is missing the download link. From MacUpdate you are sent to http://www.rbcafe.com/Cryptix-download but there is no actual download available. I eventually found another web site to download it from

2 - its advertised as being v 1.0, but the latest is actually 0.91, when it does an online check.

3 - Cryptix does not download the new version. I get a 4kb DMG on the desktop that never does anything

4 - is it free, or not? The software asks for a key, and says in trial mode with no save.

5 - I tried the Steganography, but it blew up a 1.3MB JPG into a 14.3 MB file that Preview says is corrupt.

6 - Tried the section "unix" > "logs" but it shows var/log/system.log as empty, when it isn't

Many of the features here like DNS lookup etc are just what you can do anyway, so I'm really not seeing the value.

And since this is a trial version I cannot save any files when I've encrypted them.

Sorry

Hi, seems I cannot reply to your reply, so here's some thoughts:

1 - sure I understand
2 - I was unable to find v 1.0
3 - I can only report what happened... the DMG was downloaded by the Cryptix updater, not by my browser, since I couldn't find a download
7 - sure, I do, truly appreciate these efforts, and I offer constructive views.
8 - if you can let me have the link for v 1.0 I am very happy to try again.

Thanks!

I would love the link for version 1.0 as well.

I have tried the previous versions and thought it was a great piece of software, very important for me to have at all times.

Thanks for your work!

UI issues don't seem so crucial to me - and where there is UI feedback it should be constructive, rather than negative or hostile.

What is really needed is some discussion of functionality.

Most importantly, with crypto stuff, is some sort of evaluation of the security. Is the code solid, does it leak info, has this been vetted/reviewed, etc.? I haven't been able to find anywhere a discussion of how secure this program is, and that is what we really need.
